The Club is delighted to announce that we have signed Edgar Davids on a free transfer from Inter Milan. The player will undergo a medical in the next couple of days and agree personal terms.

The 32-year-old is one of the finest all-round midfielders in the world, combining well-developed technical skills with tough tackling and a will to win.

Head Coach Martin Jol commented: “He is one of the most versatile midfielders, a playmaker, a ball-winner with great stamina and huge charisma and one of the best midfielders to come out of Holland in the last 10 years.

“This is a player who went to Barcelona when they were middle of the league and took them close to winning the title.

“It’s terrific that he is joining us. This is the player we have spoken about who will lift the team’s performance. We have a young squad with an average age of 23 and I believe Edgar will come in and lead by example.”

IMO he will be an excellent addition, that old head who is used to winning hope he has kept himself in good shape sitting on Inter's bench. I wonder what formation we're looking at? I would hate to see Tainio out. Could we be the club that Wigan has made a bid for an unknown player (michael brown). We must be looking to sell at least a couple of MF's.

Great news. Who partners him, though? Carrick?

I imagine most of the time it will be one of Davids or Tainio to partner Carrick as they're both energetic scrappers alongside his passing ability. Tainio can play well out wide though and did that at times in the Peace Cup, so he will get games there as well.

It's a great boost to the club. We did need an aggressive and experienced player in there and it will be fantastic for the likes of Huddlestone to train and play with him.

Brown and Davis will be gone, or at least one of them.

Happy about the signing, he sure did help Barca get out of the doldrums a few years back -- just the spark of experience and talent we need in the midfield. I think his game is better suited to the prem than Figo, though if he goes to 'pool, we'll find out real quick if thats the case.

Awesome. My prediction is that he'll be the Naybet of the midfield. He'll teach the youngsters all he can and he'll really help the team out.

Him and Carrick will be great together (and it'll free up Davids to attack more).

He has to pass a medical and sign the contract still doesn't he?

Yeah that is what i would say to people who say should he be the captain. He can be the captain of the midfield not of the club.Yeah he does still need to do them things Colm, i don't think agreeing personal terms will be a problem and he always seems to be fit so i cant see their being a problem with a medical.

I have a soft spot for Spurs, so I am thrilled to see this news. Davids will be a great addition, your squad just got a lot better. I think Davids will help alot and I expect him to improve the players around him. He has been a winner everywhere he has played and he will not let that change without a fight.

Congratulations, you guys should really be looking forward to this season.

From what I've heard the details are already agreed, it's a formality hence the club announcing it now. Will be a couple of days for the medical and paperwork then he'll be in our shirt
