This explains how her shite got on the airwaves.
I never could believe that people actually liked her music.

I have no problem with this....if DJ's didn't play her music.....how would we know that despite the "rocks that she's got....she's still Jenny from the block" ??

I always thought it was fishy that the Top 40 stations suddenly started playing Franz Ferdinand...

You didn't think top 40 radio was making it on ad revenue, did you?

Pretty much every artist gets on Top 40 through de facto payola. It's just that money goes through independent promoters instead of directly from label to radio, and there's no explicit promise on number of spins.

Its even a little weirder from the station's point of view...

The promoters call you all the time trying to talk you into playing their records.

If you do, BMI and ASCAP come by periodically and bill you for the privilege; its called "royalties."

So all the label is doing if it pays that kind of money is paying the cost to the station of playing the song...its a stupid system...

But the weirdest part is, it works. It doesn't matter how crappy the single. If radio plays it enough it will sell; and then 20 or 30 years later be resurrected for an ad campaign... whoever wrote "Ma-na-ma-na" is getting some nice checks these days.

Of course she's from the block, for her, love don't cost a thing.

Except for the independent promoters, of course...

Believe me, the labels are paying way more than what ASCAP/BMI are charging...WAY more.

I can't believe there is such a big stink about this...it's been going on very openly for many years, with many stations actually declaring these payments as income and treating "bought spins" as advertising revenue. Yeah, the occasional gift to an MD or PD happens, but the bigger issue of paid play is totally commonplace. How else could that first Audioslave album have had so many "popular" singles?

Yeah, file this under "why mainstream radio sucks..."

Not surprising in the least. Who hasn't asked the question "Why the hell is this song popular??"

Oddly, my wife, who has a ridiculously wide breadth of musical enjoyment and whom I consider to have excellent taste in music, actually likes several J.Lo songs. They don't do much for me, but I'd certainly look at J.Lo with the volume down.
