View Full Version : TV Coverage DC VS LA [R]

MLS needs to upgrade the TV coverage. First, the two guys in the booth should go. The USL game last night had only one announcer - Steve Bell - and it was infinitely superior; Bell let the picture tell the story most of the time and added just enought narration -- much like some of the European broadcasts. The two magpies on the MLS broadcast just jabber away, in general providing only a distraction from the game. Second, let's also lose the interviews with the coaches and the visits to Brandi or whoever. Let the coaches coach, for heaven's sake. I enjoy Peter's thinly veiled contempt for the stupid questions, but I would be willing to pass on that in the interests of a better broadcast. Third, the same goes for the side by side commercials.
Eric is obviously a bright guy, but it is just as obvious that he is a complete jerk. Someone commented that he must be taking lessons from Bill Walton in how to insult as many current players as possible. Harkes proves every broadcast that it's possible to be brutally honest about the quality of play without insulting any of the players. Finally, someone ought to point out to Eric that his constant harping about Freddy sounds every so much like sour grapes.

Maybe we could convince MLS that dropping all that would save them a lot of money.

I do have to say though....I like Rob Stone's enthusiasm when goals are scored. That gets the rest of us pumped up as well. I have been very critical of Rob Stone at times but when it comes to bringing excitment to the game when it's called for, he's on top of it.
He and Eric called a great game today in my opinion.

This really is a stupid thread.

I enjoy the current style of British coverage.

Wynalda drawing the Madden-eque lines made me  and then get pissed when he kept doing it..I kept waiting for him to say "BOOM!"

I watch any soccer game that I can - but I won't watch ESPN MLS (except for DCU :o ) any more. I'll watch EPL, La Liga, Italian, Peru, Brazilian, USL - but ESPN MLS is impossible to watch. The side-to-side is distracting and unwatchable.
So, forget it, I'm tired of screaming at the set and getting upset. The heck with it.

It was epic when he brought up the telestrator menu right before one of the free kicks.
Aside from that though, I thought Stone did a great job today. He covered very well for Wynalda when he disappeared for the first 3 minutes of the second half.

I think Wynalda is great.
He provides a strong viewpoint and isn't wishy-washy trying to please everyone. He says what's on his mind and if someone screws up, he says so.
I think it's fantastic that he remains objective for the most part while still providing a critical viewpoint. It's something that's desperately needed in some sports commentary where every play is great, all the guys are heroes, and every match is fantastic.

Wynalda today though didn't seem quite like himself. It was almost like he was sick or something (maybe he and Rimando had the same breakfast this morning) where he was passive, quiet, and a bit off.
As for the FSC match last night, it was great over the last ten minutes when the group of 12 year old boys found the field mic. Too bad they didn't have anything better to say than "Hey, hey...hey what's up" repeatadly.

Why do people care so much about TV announcers?

Those Sierra Mist ads are horrible. Enough to make me not drink Sierra Mist. That little jingle they play after their "humorous" vignette really annoys me.

My God, yes! That guy doing the ads I am sure is well known from somewhere (I think "I Love The (decade of your choice)" on VH1), but he is not a wit by any stretch. I noticed they threw in an extra ad in the first half. Anyway, I haven't had a Sierra Mist ever and I don't think their ads persuade me a bit.

I could really care less who's in the booth or on the sidelines. We get to see the game!

My tip for the side-by-side ads: With Tivo, I usually wait until the game is just about to start, then pause it for a minute or two and go grab a drink and snack for the first or second half. Since I'm technically a minute or a little more behind, whenever they pull up those ads, I just fast forward through them in about four or five seconds and don't have to worry about them.
Sure, I could miss a "live" goal, but it sucks trying to watch 1/6th of the screen that is the game anyway so it's not like I miss much.

I think they're trying to do a "Curb Your Enthusiasm"-ish goofy humor thing. As was said earlier, you should be thankful the game is on. But you should also be thankful that those ads didn't include:
these hot but extremely annoying women,

this guy,

or this guy.

My favorite part of the broadcast was Stone and Wynalda's reaction to the Magic Minute pick of LA Galaxy backup keeper Steve Cronin scoring in the 60th minute. Since I think this is one of the dumbest promotions of all time, I found the pick perfectly suited for the "Moronic Minute." I've never entered but I may do so every week and use the backup keeper for the hometeam as my guy.
