Tivoli Gardens Football Club will play a seven-match tour in the United States for one month, from July 30 to August 27, under the auspices of the United Nations.
The West Kingston club has benefited from a United Nations programme, the World of Former United Nations Interns and Fellows (WAFUNIF).
A United Nations consultative body, WAFUNIF is promoting a Futbol 4 Peace and Development campaign, through a non-profit global Youth Development Foundation, and Tivoli Gardens, the 2003/2004 National Premier League (NPL) champions, were chosen to represent Jamaica.
The team leaves the island on the July 28 and will play matches in Atlanta, New York and Fort Lauderdale.
The tour opens on July 30 in Atlanta with Tivoli playing a Caribbean Select side. The following day they face a Hispanic League team, before heading to New York for three weeks, where they will compete against teams from Haiti, Grenada and local leagues.
On August 6, Independence Day, the feature game will be against a Bronx International All-Stars while on August 27, Trinidad and Tobago's independence day, Tivoli play Trinidad champions, W-Connection in Fort Lauderdale.
The team will return the following day.
Nineteen players, along with six officials, will make the trip. However, coach Glendon 'Admiral' Bailey said there would be plans to include a few invitational players on the tour.
The tour, he pointed out, was not a leisure trip as he himself would be looking to improve his tactical awareness with the players concentrating on their tactical game in readiness for the premier league.
Club president Edward Seaga, who helped with the negotiations of the tour, welcomed the trip. "This is a wonderful opportunity for us, and I hope the team enjoys the tour and it brings them success," he said.
United Nation's General Secretary Kofi Annan endorsed the programme on March 26.
