You don't need an Ipod, just buy some white headphones, put them on and stick the cord in your pocket, then everyone at Starbucks will assume that you are an Ipod person, just like them. ;)

I acutally know people who do that, one of my friends wanted to buy my IPOD earphones off me for 30 bucks. I would have sold it but how elese would everyone know I have an ipod?

They suck. It's just another case of fashion over substance.

Agreed, and I dont usually fall victim to these things but this time I did. And its not even semi original, I see everyone with them nowadays. Even old people.

I don't know, I think they are decent MP3 players. There is certainly a lot of hype around them, but there is nothing wrong with the hardware. Simple and efficient, it holds my music collection and gets good battery life. Other players are larger and a bitch to use (especially since I own a Powerbook). A lot of undue hatred is cast against iPods since they are the status symbol now.

That said, the white earbuds and whole flaunting one's iPod is bollocks. I live in the city and unless you want to risk your iPod being stolen, you keep it in your jacket. I also don't wear the crappy sounding earbuds which say to people "I have money and an iPod, ROB ME." and have a solid pair of Sennheiser headphones. Even though, the way I dress, most people wouldn't associate me with the iPod crowd or even think of robbing me. ;)

Ipods are overrated Teso was right, sooner or later these things are gonna be considered "out" and nobody's gonna want them anymore and everybody would've wasted 200 dollars on them, now that being said, everybody in my family has one but me.

People can complain about the Sony software, but the hardware is far superior to the iPod in every single way. The iRiver players, some of the Creative models and even the new Cowon player all stand up to the iPod. The iPod is an adequate player, but nothing more. It is the press, hype and image that Apple have created that is the major selling point. Well done to them, but a pity for all of those ignorantly sucked in.

The anti-iPod bandwagon is almost as laughable as the status symbol toting iPod supporter bandwagon. Hardware wise there is nothing wrong with Apple's product.

SONY as a competitor. You are now having a laugh, Sony! The same Sony whose build quality has been getting worse and worse over the last ten years. The same sony whose products are completely overpriced and even more than apple value style over substance. The same Sony MP3 players which aren't even in color. The same Sony whose terrible music store has a reputation as being one of the worst out there. The same Sony MP3 player that transcodes all of your goddamn mp3s to their goddamn ATRAC format?!

How that can be a better product is beyond me.

Iriver makes a solid mp3 player, the Rio Karma is also considered to be solid by many, and there are others as well. I did a lot of research before choosing an iPod. I don't care for the whole fashion scene status symbol clever Apple marketing (they marketed the damn thing brilliantly) but it is as good a player as any, and better than many. Certainly better than the joke of an offering by Sony. The Sony product which doesn't even have a color dispaly, has a worse interface, etc. If anything the iPod is a simple mp3 player which just plays the damn music you choose. I keep my whole music collection (many a quality cd) on there and when I take my hourly commute listen to one. I don't see myself outgrowing that simple pleasure or the device anytime soon. It sure beats carrying the bulky cd player and multiple cds around, plus batteries to boot.

I'm not trying to advocate buying an iPod but I hate when people spread misinformation.

Instead of attacking my argument, you attacked my choice of music player. You missed the point in what I was saying.

I'm not claiming the iPod to be the end all music player or even better than most other options. I simply stated it is a solid option that appeals to many people, and that doesn't necessarily make it bad. The Sony product is without doubt inferior to the Apple offering for many reasons. The lack of features, build quality, ease of use, and warranty are solid points. The only place where the Sony product excels is with battery life and since it has the Sony name, which everyone mistakenly associates that with quality.

I wouldn't recommend the iPod to people who don't own a mac or have no interest in the itms. iAudio makes an incredible player for around the same price. It plays all kinds of audio, shows photos, and even plays video! iRiver has a similar player which is supposed to be quite good as well.

Utterly beside the point, i recommend a cheap AM/FM radio with a pair of white earbuds, no one will ever know the difference when you're buying your soy latte at Starbucks.
