I said this before, but the whole reason why I bought an iPod was I started shopping on iTunes. On its own, there's nothing special about the iPod. But when you add iTunes into the mix, then the iPod becomes more attractive. Admittedly, there are things I don't particularly care for about it (I have no idea why it takes around an hour to charge 80% and another three hours to charge the remaining 20%), but it was the only player that plays the iTunes format.

You can use software to covert the iTunes format into whatever you want.

You can legally take the DRM off ITMS AAC files?

My 20g zen touch is the best thing I've bought in years. The only thing that could be a problem is that the 1/8" jack is a bit dodgy so you can't jog with it. That's fine by me because with my asthma and allergies I like to listen to my breathing when I run anyways.

when I lift weights I just clip it onto my shorts, and if I do the elliptcal or bike it just sits on the machine display so its out of the way.

Same here. My only worry is when I'm doing hanging leg-lifts I always think it's going to fall off my shorts, but that's just because I'm paranoid about expensive stuff.

People can complain about the Sony software, but the hardware is far superior to the iPod in every single way. The iRiver players, some of the Creative models and even the new Cowon player all stand up to the iPod. The iPod is an adequate player, but nothing more. It is the press, hype and image that Apple have created that is the major selling point. Well done to them, but a pity for all of those ignorantly sucked in.
I don't know that its fair to label all iPod owners ignorant lemmings though. I'm technically savvy, and I had originally resisted the temptation. But when the Mini came out, I felt the combination of size, software, and aesthetics was good enough for me to justify the price. Were there theoretically better options in terms of value at the time (early 2004)? Probably. But it all depends on what's most important, and I had placed a high value on design, which Apple has had a pretty good reputation for. There are things I don't particularly care for, like the weak battery life and screwy battery meter, as well as the overzealous sleep mode. But overall I can't complain.
Honestly though, if you're going to pick an alternative music player, you really like Sony? I mean, Creative, Rio, and iRiver are generally easier to use. I guess at least Sony's more recent models finally have native MP3 support, but it sure took them a while. Plus you'll pay the Sony brand name premium.

I go for Sony because having compared their portable music players to other rivals (from the age of cassette to mp3) I have usually found their players to be far superior in terms of quality and sound.

My ipod mini is one of the most useful things i own. I too got locked into the itunes service, which is still by far the best. Why subscribe to something for 15/month when some months ill only buy 3-4 songs? Its also just so easy to use, and switch between harddrive modes etc.
Its size and weight were unbeatable at the time i bought it as well. Between my wallet, cellphone and ipod its easily the smallest thing in my pockets so i dont have this incredible bulge when i walk around.
