In addition, MLS also announced today that MetroStars President & General Manager Alexi Lalas has been fined $2000 by the MLS Disciplinary Committee. The fine was imposed for comments published in the June 21 edition of The New York Times.

The first part was the taping of the Metro Soccer Report, a weekly cable television show, which included questions from some fans.

But the segment wasn't picked up by the house speakers, and most of those in attendance couldn't hear the questions or the GM's response. Undeterred, Lalas took to the bar - literally - to have an informal Q&A with fans.

Why look at the huge boost in attendance he's given the team already (June, 15,125 vs. DC, 11,666 vs Crew, 12,199 vs. LA, and 8,324 vs Colorado with all games being on a saturday except DC).


Perhaps Lalas was really sent to Metros as punishment for the comments about the Landon tranfer and moving San Jose.

Well, the league was going to extend his contract as GM for another year but common sense and decency prevailed and they only fined him $2,000 instead.

Heck, you can't buy that kind of publicity for 2 k. Alexi pulls off another fast one. He capitalized on what is unfortunately about the only MLS name (ADU)recognized by more than 1% of the American people to get some ink. Don't sell Lalas short, this guy is very clever, and moving to NY just puts him one step closer to the league offices.
Kevin can bluster all he wants about tampering, but the Adu magic at the gate petered out about as fast as he did on the field, and this does something to rekindle a modicum of interest. This is pure WWF imitation done very poorly.
Payne should spend more of his time fixing slumping attendance at RFK and getting a field worthy of decent high school team to play on. It took baseball to get RFK even half way cleaned up after 9 years of neglect with United as sole tenant. Payne isn't exactly the all-powerful Oz of MLS either.
