My wife with some misguided thought that I'd like to go and see Sunderland bought me two tickets for the game last night.
I took one of the soccerdads from the team I coach and we actually had a good time. Fun crowd with a surprizing number of red stipes shirts were there I even saw one red tee with a picture of 'super Kev' on!
The match was OK, entertaining at least. The Sounders had a bit to prove and tried hard and didn't make fools of themselves. (I noticed Jimmy Gabriel, ex Everton, was still involved)
Sunderland cruised and moved the ball around pretty good, lousey finishing though. The goal they "scored' didn't look in to me. Hit the underside of the bar with an excellent shot but it looked to me like it bounced forward and back into play but the linesman said goal.....that's what counts.

The continual anouncements and adverts from the 'loud' PA system was really distracting and annoying.

A couple of pints after the match made up for it, a pleasant night out.

Which section did you sit in? I was down with the Emerald City Supporters at the bottom of 113. Nice to see that many people there. We're not crazy about the announcements there, either.

Yeah, Lawrence's goal was very, very iffy. It's telling that the only camera replay they showed was a field-level shot with absolutely no perspective on the goal line. If it had been in, they would've shown all the replays.

Pretty much agree with the rest of your assessment as well. Here's a match report (http://seattlepitch.tripod.com/matches/2005/jul20.html) from the Sounders' POV.

I was sitting in the front row at the corner flag of the north goal.

It definitely wasn't a goal. But you could make an argument that Sunderland were set to score on the rebound anyway.

That linesman was smoking crack all game...

Are you mackems kidding me!? I know it's a pre-season game, but you should score at least 1 damn goal on an American semi-pro team!!

Actually the Timbers, Sounders and Whitecaps are are professional teams whose players are actually paid (albeit not very much in some cases).

Cheers

What the hell is a professional team doing in the USL? Aren't they semi-pro? Why don't the Timbers join the MLS? They proven they can hang with a good club already.

USL Division 1 is one league below MLS. All the teams are professional. There are many good players playing at the level, including national team players and players who have played internationally. Some make more money than if they played in MLS. At the moment, I'm more concerned with the Timbers finishing in the top half of the league and advancing in the US Open Cup this year than joining MLS.

********, if USL Division 1 is one proffesional too, then we need a relegation/promotion system. :)
