:D That game will be the semi final round of the German League Cup. Bayern is the one seed since they had finished the Bundesliga first last year. The top two teams get a bye into the second round while the 3rd and 6th play, and the 4th and 5th play. Both first round games will be played on the 23rd of July in Dusseldorf. Bayern will either be playing Stuttgart or Berlin on the 26th, it just depends on who wins that match on the 23rd. Hope this helps you out. :D

See the thing is that when it comes to things to win as a club in Germany these are it.

1A--Champions League
1B--Uefa Cup
2--Bundesliga (CL berth for 1st 2, CL qual for 3rd, Uefa 4 & 5)
3--DFB Cup
4--League Cup

The league cup yes is a trophy, but it is like a preseason tournament. It is the 6 best from the Bundesliga from the term before. So it is sort of nice to see the new faces and who might be better for the incoming term. Yes it will mean something but most teams aren't in form in late July. Heck we just had gotten our Confed guys back on July 20th. It means very little but it is a competition before the term.

These are the results from the final the past couple years:
2004 Bayern München (3:2 in the final against Werder Bremen
2003 Hamburger SV (4:2 in the final against Borussia Dortmund)
2002 Hertha BSC Berlin (4:1 in the final against Schalke 04)
2001 Hertha BSC Berlin (4:1 in the final against Schalke 04)
2000 Bayern München (5:1 in the final against Hertha BSC Berlin)
1999 Bayern München (2:1 in the final against SV Werder Bremen)
1998 Bayern München (4:0 in the final against VfB Stuttgart)
1997 Bayern München (2:0 in the final against VfB Stuttgart)

Most see the "League Cup" as a useful tourney to get ready for the season rather than a "title" or "trophy" to be won.

It only matters, of course, to those involved. I think it should be called the "1. Liga Cup" because a true "League Cup" would involve teams from each "professional" league. Or, in Germany's case, 1. Liga, 2. Liga and both Regionalligas.

It would also be contested during the season as England's and Scotland's are with something at stake.

This thing is just something that started as an experiment in place of the old German Supercup match. That was a match between the Bundesliga Champions and the German Cup Winners. They even still give out the old SuperCup trophy.

I didn't realize it at the time, but if "BMike86's" post is correct, I was at the final German Supercup Match. Borussia Dortmund v. 1. FC Kaiserslautern in Mannheim in 1996. We (Dortmund) were coming off our second consecutive Bundesliga title and Kaiserslautern had just been relegated, but hired Otto Rehhagel as their coach after Bayern fired Rehhagel just in time for Beckenbauer to get credit for leading them to their UEFA Cup victory.

FCK played good enough to win in the Supercup match and honestly should have won, but Dortmund mounted a comeback in final minutes of the match and won on penalties.

That season, Dortmund went on to win the Champions' League and Kaiserslautern battled Hertha BSC in what is still the best 2. Liga title battle in the history of the league. I remember the two clubs had a showdown late in the season in Berlin and it wound up being the highest attendance ever recorded for a 2. Liga match. It was right at 70,000.

Both teams won promotion and I honestly forgot which one actually finished first.

Of course, the season after that, FCK became the first and still only promotee from the 2. Liga to win the 1. Bundesliga title in the season of their promotion.

Even after winning Euro 2004 with Greece, I was still never so happy for Otto Rehhagel than the day 1. FC Kaiserslautern won that Bundesliga title.

Boy, I went off on quite a tangent there, didn't I?? LOL!!! :)

Sorry, I can get that way when remembering what I call "the good old days" of the Bundesliga.

Just before the decline started......... :(

The Bundesliga fore sure is more important than the Uefa Cup.

In the end Hertha BSC finished ten points behind Lautern, after losing their last 3 games. But I somehow remember Kaiserslautern beating Meppen 7:6 on the final day of that season.

Oh, no.

A victory of the League Cup is a good omen of a successful season. :D

Trap's new-look Stuttgart face first test (http://soccernet.espn.go.com/headlinenews?id=337421&cc=5901)

"The pre-season League Cup generates little interest in Germany but Trapattoni is eager to do well on his competitive debut, with a semi-final against his former club Bayern Munich on Tuesday at stake."
said about Giovanni Trapattoni----Coach of Stuttgart

If you are saying Trappattoni said this, that's not true. I read that article. Trap said no such thing. That was the writer's OPINION. It means about as much as yours or mine.

What was the point anyhow?? ;)

WTF, my bad that last post I had slipped. Good call footy, I had read the article and had misinterpreted the piece I was using for my argument.

Good catch, vielen dank! :D
