Reserve game result:

KC 4 - DC 2.
Arrowhead practice field.
Preki had 2, Matt Nickel had 2.

Apparently Matt had more family and friends there than everyone else combined.

Uh, no. Preki isn't 90 minutes fit. So he played 45 in the MLS match, got a good night's sleep, the played some more this morning.

He's played quite a few Reserve games this season.

Has he taken out any 19 year old benchwarmers yet?

I kid, cause I actually like Preki. Ya gotta admit, its a bit ridiculous that he is playing in reserve games. He's twice the age of most of the players.

Also of interest, from KC Media Relations . . .

The hot and muggy weather took it's toll on both sides by the end of the match despite the referees stopping play midway through the second half to allow a water break for the players. The stoppage was agreed upon when D.C. United midfielder Nana Kuffour was taken off in the 69th minute and taken to the Wizards training room to be treated for heat exhaustion.

Van Sicklen and Guppy played 90. Our reserves included Allen Handy (who?) and Ryan Futagaki (who?).

But it's serving its purpose for him. He needs minutes to get his sharpness back. He's just not to the point where he can play for 90. So 45 minutes of competitive action on consecutive days is a great thing. It's exactly what the Reserves are for. To give time to guys at the end of the bench and to get recovering injured players -like Preki- a chance to get their fitness and sharpness back.

Guppy went 90 in the heat that sent Ghanaian-born Nana Kuffour to the locker room for heat exhaustion? Maybe he is more fit for Washington summers than we thought!

Ryan Futagaki was on the Fire last year (or 2003, can't recall which) and was one of the players I thought we should have picked up off waivers.

Handy is an FIU alum who we have given numerous looks at.

So Preki scored two goals in one half? Pretty good for an old guy.

For just the reserve game, or both games combined? :p

Both teams have long-in-tooth vets who fit this category - Preki for KC Guppy for DC. These reserve games certainly give the younger bench-warmers a chance for real game action as well as providing it to vets who are either injured or squeezed out of the 1st team. Another less common category of players seeing time in these reserve games are players trialing for senior roster spots like John Wilson did before signing with DC. With Wilson's success (serviceable player at very low costs), I would imagine that clubs will try to audition more Wilson types in future reserve games.

Andrew Weber played 21 minutes and was credited with an assist. I didn't see the game, so I can't say whether Martin impressed in his two minutes plus stoppage time, but based on the available info, I gotta say DC wins the battle of the 3rd string keepers playing in the field". :D

Armando Burciaga?

Forward from Dallas who played ball at Cedar Valley College - have to assume that he is related to the one with the cannon shot - Jose Burciaga Jr.

Weber for A-mid, Now!

2 clean breakaways against Columbus and now this. Truly the Freddy Adu experiment is now over. It's only a matter of time.

Thx,

Jay! :)

Handy is a stiff. He should just be Boswell's baggage butler, because he isn't a defender.

Here's a link to a previous report from Columbus. (http://www.bigsoccer.com/forum/showpost.php?p=5417191&postcount=18)
Final was 4:1.

Starters:
---------Perkins
---#12 Allen Handy --- #5 Timmy Sahaydak-------- Merrit
--------------Simms--------------------Kukendell
-#20 Traeger---------------------Adu ----------------------Brilliant
-----------------Walker--------------Nickell

Goals:
CLB: Sutton in 2nd half scored.
DCU: 1st half - Adu (PK), Kukendall; 2nd half Quill (approx 2 mins in), Nickell

#5 and #12 were absolutely atrocious. Storey was absolutely torching the back, but like the senior team, they couldn't score.

in 2nd half, Webber, Nana, Dema came on.

Nice fields - hot sun. Nice results.

Yeah, but that was basically a trialist backline. Play with some of the regular reserves (Stokes, Arena, Merritt, etc.) and then evaluate him. It's possible he's another diamond in the rough, and it's not like we have a whole helluva lot of defenders at the moment.
