I still have a feeling they will struggle at the World Cup. Tommy Hilfiger doesnt know who his best back 4 is and never plays them together. Also if you think we have problems at left midfield, they hardly have a left back worthy of the name.

I don't think we American fans put much faith in the rankings. We all know we have a long way to go to be consistent competition with the top teams in the world. To be in front of England, France, Germany, Spain, etc is a bit hard to believe.

Although, I'd hate for you guys to underestimate our team - you saw what happened to Portugal (and almost Germany) in '02. I'd love to see US vs. England in '06 - a "real" game with both "A" teams.

Ha! What's even funnier is Canada, who just lost to Honduras, Costa Rica and the US, but defeated Cuba, is now ranked higher than Scotland (85th)! Goes to show the depths Scottish football has sunk to :-).

Of course, it's silly to take these rankings, which are based on a flawed mathematical model, seriously. There's only one world ranking that counts, and that's where your team finishes every four years after the World Cup final.

Cheers,
Bill

BTW...my post above is to take nothing away from the USA...I think any team in the world who underestimates them will leave the pitch extremely dissappointed at the end of the match.

Cheers,
Bill

we played them only last month and they underestimated us actually.
they underestimated our depth and that we can play without our top team and still win with 3rd or 4th string guys.

They reached the QF in WC 2002 so they arent an unknown team anymore.
if they dont repeat at least a QF place in germany they will have gone backwards in their progress.

I don't disagree with the first part. Keep in mind, the US wasn't even close to first string though.

I think the US only has to make it out of the group stage to have a somewhat successful World Cup. After that, it depends on who you draw. We were lucky to get Mexico in '02.

The FIFA rankings system is the biggest crock of Bull kaka ever. USA shouldn't be in the top ten, much less pass England.

.

The team (http://www.thefa.com/England/SeniorTeam/NewsAndFeatures/Postings/2005/05/USAvEngland_MatchReport.htm) that faced us in chicago is practically the same team that was fielded for the qualifiers which took place in the subsequent week against panama (http://fifaworldcup.yahoo.com/06/en/t/sc/archive.html?id=39399&year=2005&month=6&day=8) and costa rica (http://fifaworldcup.yahoo.com/06/en/t/sc/archive.html?id=39380&year=2005&month=6&day=4).
and not too far off the gold cups lineup that were seen against teams like jamaica (http://www.ussoccerplayers.com/game_time/483356.html).

hmmm now its seems that the USA fans are downplaying the strength of the team they put out and say things like "ooohhh it was just our B team" when it clearly ********in' wasnt.

These "rankings" are irrelevant to us anyway, as we'll be a first seed when we qualify.

All that matters is disposing of Poland and then looking forward to a strong showing at the finals.

The Eloratings are much more accurate:

The rankings will never be normal, it's just the way fifa works and people have different opinion.

I would definitely agree.

One of the reasons England's rating declined this month was that performances at the World Cups in 2002 and 1998 were downgraded because they've passsed into a previous year, as did performances in Portugal and Belgium-Holland.

USA and Mexico see their ratings increase because of the absurdly overvalued Confederations Cup, and the earlier part of the CONCACAF Gold Cup.

Germany play their first competitive games since 2004 in the Confederations Cup and rise 11 places in the rankings as a result.

And Egypt are the highest ranked African nation, for no reason that I can fathom.

Yeah, it pretty much was. A team without O'Brien, Beasley, Reyna, and Johnson is most definitely not our full strength team. We played some guys who would start in a World Cup, but probably half or more wouldn't. A/B Team, B Team, does it really matter?

We know we wouldn't normally beat you. We know we're not the sixth best team in the world. And we also know that getting out of our group in the WC is probably a good result and getting to quarters again is probably not to be expected yet. After all, if it takes England 12 years to make another trip to the quarterfinals in 2002, what makes us think we can do it in 4?

yep, what he said. we have figured out that we actually can play with anyone now. we're not shaking in our boots when we step on the pitch with the likes of germany, portugal, etc. anymore. we know we're not worthy of a no. 6 world ranking, but then we're americans and we just like pissing off the rest of the world any way that we can. :)

Same excuses we always hear .
-Reyna the player who written off as a has-been after his woeful display in mexico is suddenly "mr vital". A guy who is regularly injured.
-the terminally injured Obrien has hardly played for 3 years.

These 2 guys are injured regularly so yanks play their "B team" card when they lose and say they werent at full strength .Your excuses have worn thin a long time ago.
