As a companion to the album thread, here's my short list so far. But my exposure new stuff has been pretty limited -- I've heard less than half of the albums listed in the Best Album thread. But for my money, so far it's a dead heat between the Yin and Yang of pop music at the moment:

Art Brut -- Good Weekend; and
Sufjan Stevens -- Chicago

My short list of also rans would be:

Black Mountain- Modern Music
M.I.A. - Galang
Super Furry Animals - Lazer Beam
Bloc Party - Helicopter

Bloc Party - Helicopter
The production on that song is really cool. If you listen to it with headphones, it actually sounds like a helicopter spinning around.

That said, it's not even close to one of my favorite songs for the whole album.

Since U Been Gone by Kelly Clarkson.

Honestly, I don't know how anyone could possibly think there has been a finer song made in the least ten years.

Since U Been Gone by Kelly Clarkson.

Honestly, I don't know how anyone could possibly think there has been a finer song made in the least ten years. Please, Behind These Hazel Eyes is better.

I like Helicopter too, though I have trouble picking one favorite. I'm thinking Banquet, myself.

The rest:
- Stars "Ageless Beauty" (does this count as a 2005 song)
- Feist "Mushaboom"
- Gorillaz "Feelgood Inc" (obvious, but it is a damn good track)
- Common "Food" (I really, really, really hate that they didn't put the studio version on the album)
- Clap Your Hands Say Yeah!! "Tidal Wave"

"The skin of my yellow country teeth" by Clap Your Hands Say Yeah will not leave my CD player.

Downloaded and listened...

Music = good.
Vocals = WTF? Are you serious? If so, I guess I just don't get it. Unless those aren't the real lyrics and it's some version they put out there to curb downloads.

Top 10(+3) in no particular order:

Nouvelle Vague - "Too Drunk to [Fornicate]" (covers count)
Sambassadeur - "Between the Lines"
The Cloud Room - "Hey Now Now"
The Decemberists - "16 Military Wives"
Bonnie 'Prince' Billy & Matt Sweeney - "Only Someone Running"
The Mountain Goats - "This Year"
Black Mountain - "Modern Music"
Art Brut - "Good Weekend"
Andrew Bird - "Fake Palidromes"
Archer Prewitt - "O, KY"
Sufjan Stevens - "Casimir Pulaski Day"
CYHSY - "Details of the War"
The Go! Team - "Huddle Formation" (it's going to be released in the US later this year so I'm tossing it in here)

It's been a good year for music.

This is the perfect thread for me, cuz at the end of every year I make a "best of" cd, and I keep a list of singles I like (and singles by artists I like) during the year and add to it. Ssome may actually be late 2004, but if they received a decent amount of airtime this year, then I count them as 2005 songs (not sure if all of these songs fit that criteria). For my year end mix cd, I include only 16 songs, and I also only use each artist once. Here's what I have for this year so far:

Top Singles

Annie - "Heartbeat"
Avril Lavigne - "Nobody's Home"
Basement Jaxx - "Oh My Gosh"
Beastie Boys - "An Open Letter To NYC"
Coldplay - "Speed Of Sound"
DJ Tiesto - "Just Be"
Eminem - "Mockingbird"
Faithless - "Miss U Less, See U More"
Foo Fighters - "Best Of You"
Game f/50 Cent - "Hate It Or Love It"
Girls Aloud - "I'll Stand By You"
Good Charlotte - "I Just Wanna Live"
Gorillaz - "Feel Good Inc"
Green Day - "Holiday"
Gwen Stefani f/Eve - "Rich Girl"
Jamiroquai - "Feels Just Like It Should"
Jimmy Eat World - "Work"
Kanye West - "Diamonds"
Kelly Clarkson - "Since U Been Gone"
Killers - "Mr. Brightside"
Kylie Minogue - "I Believe In You"
Ludacris f/Bobby V - "Pimpin' All Over The World"
Mariah Carey - "We Belong Together"
Missy Elliot f/Ciara & Fatman Scoop - "Lose Control"
Rachel Stevens - "Negotiate With Love"
Robbie Williams - "Misunderstood"
Oasis - "Lyla"
Scissor Sisters - "Filthy/Gorgeous"
Snoop Dogg f/Justin Timberlake & Uncle Charlie Wilson - "Signs"
Timo Maas f/Brian Molko - "First Day"
Weezer - "Beverly Hills"

I would say that "Oh My Gosh" and "I Believe In You" are my favorites so far.

Good Charlotte - "I Just Wanna Live"

That's an f-ing great song. If it was by anyone else, hipsters across the land would proclaim it as such.

For Annie, it's a toss-up for me among "Heartbeat," "Greatest Hit," and "Chewing Gum."

Others off the top of my head:

Kaiser Chiefs - "Born To Be A Dancer"
Maximo Park - The whole frickin' album.
Feist - "One Evening"
Art Brut - "Good Weekend"
The Cloud Room - "Hey Now Now"
Sambassadeur - "Between The Lines"
Ambulance Ltd - "Stay Where You Are"
Bromheads Jacket - "Woolley Bridge"
John Wilkes Booze - "Bernadine"
Pravada - "One Foot In Front Of The Other" and "Holding Hands"
Beck - "Que Onda Guero"
Dressy Bessy - "The Things That You Say That You Do"
Brazilian Girls - "Don't Stop"
Sleater-Kinney - "Entertain"

I love it how this is the only place on the planet where three different people out of about ten consider "Good Weekend" to be one of the best songs of the year. They have never toured the US, and forget radio play -- not even WFMU has played it. I often say "in some parallel universe this song is huge." This is a parallel universe.

With that said, I called it the song of the year about a month ago and I'm sticking by it.

M.I.A. - "Galang"
