I've been experiencing some popping and cracking in my right ankle. It doesn't hurt all that much except sometimes if I kick a really pumped up ball pretty hard. I feel like it does limit my range of motion however and sometimes hurts if I try to bend my foot too far certain ways. Any ideas? Thanks.

I normally experience some popping and cracking in my ankles when every day for God knows how long and it doesn't bother me at all. It usually happens when I stretch or walk barefooted on the carpet. I don't worry about that, because my Dad, who's a marathon runner has the same thing and he's OK with that.

I took a shot off the end of my toes once. It made my ankle sore, and provided a limited range of motion. It was just a stretch of everything there, so no big deal. I just iced and rested my ankle and it was eventually fine.
I have the every day pops and cracks of my ankles. and toes. It adds character.

I too have ankles that snap, crackle, and pop. it's not a problem if it doesn't hurt, but if they are hurting you should see a doctor.

I've got it in my right ankle too. Doesn't bother me unless I kick a ball odly, then it gives me a bother, but I just run it off.

I've got this in my ankles and my elbows...one of which was dislocated. When I was seeing an orthopaedist about the elbow, he said not to worry about it. I honestly can't remember what he attributed it to because once he said don't worry about it...i pretty much tuned out.
Of course range of motion issues could be another thing. But frankly it sounds like you may have over worked it to a strain once and so now when you overwork it it gets sore, which would be normal.
BTW I have no medical degree whatsoever so simply take it for what it's worth... :)

Cracking is nothing to worry about. My knees have been doing it for years and years, my ankles and fingers have been doing it for a while too.
What I suggest you do if you feel some limitation of movement in your ankle is do the same stretching programme I'm doing. I've got a tear in one of my ankle ligaments and the physio has got me to stretch it every hour. The stretches are basically the full range of movement for the ankle (ie. toes pointing to the sky and the ankle on the ground, then toes on the ground and ankle as high as you can). Also do it side to side.
I've had the problem for about 6 months and finally the stretching (and some other treatment she did) is curing it.
Also make sure you warm it up and stretch it well when you exercise.

Sounds like a light ankle sprain to me, or just normal wear and tear from playing a lot. If it doesn't get better by itself, you need to strengthen the ankle, and maybe wear a brace for a little while, or else just rest it for a bit. To strengthen it you might want to just rotate your ankle in a circle several times, in your full range of motion using all of your muscles until the muscles get too tired, then again in the other direction. Calf raises also help, and also try walking around on just your heels, keeping your toes pulled up as high as you can. You should be careful if it's a wear and tear kind of thing since it will be weaker than normal and more prone to injury in this state. If it ever hurts when you cut or change directions in a game, I'd wear a brace for a while.

I've sprained both my ankles in the last year and now they pop and crack all the time.
Like someone else mentioned, I would recommend stretching it out before exercise.

I experience this too, but I have just gotten used to it. The problem is I am 16 and almost every joint of my body cracks.

Mine have done this for years, especially going up and down stairs. I've found that if I do some excercises for it, it goes away. I rotate my ankles on a circle, but I wrap an ankle weight around the toe of my shoe. It helps strengthen the entire ankle. Works well for me.

Just go see your doc/physiotherapist mention the discomfort an theyll prob send you away with a few exercises to do, I crunched my jaw when i was lal and its crunched and clicked ever since, pissed a few girlfriends off i can tell ya, but locked up completly few months back, got given a set of exercises an its back to just clickin, those weights on the foot sound like a good idea but might be an idea to check first to make sure its not a joint problem otherwise weights will just cause you to wear you joint down an bugger it completly.
