Dollar signs point toward soccer boom
By JOHN P. LOPEZ
Some 25 years ago on one of my first trips to Houston, a friend drove me to Baytown for reasons I cannot recall anymore.
But I do remember the smell.

Of course, that's just a headline. Lopez doesn't actually argue that we'll see any sort of "boom."
The column is really more about this sort of thing: "We're delighted to see things like this," Luck said. "It benefits us, benefits the taxpayer because there is revenue coming in.
"And the most important thing is our growing Hispanic population (some of whom) maybe weren't fans of other things can say, 'Houston has something for me, too.' It's a financial thing. But it's a social cohesion point."

Luck states that many of these Latinos probably don't go to Texans games. Oh boy!!! Redneck 101! I mean when I'm out and about in Clutch City I see a David Carr or Sharper jersey on a Latino dude all the time! Some might be sporting the colors cuz its "cool" but most really do like the team and the sport. I don't go to Texans games cuz I don't have season seats or the extra cash to buy open ones...doesn't mean I don't follow the team and I'm the poster child for white America Mr. Luck.
Same could be said about the Latinos in Houston. IMHO I think they know quit a bit about the american version of football Oliver. The reverse is also true. Are you also saying that beacuse I'm white I'm already new to soccer and not a part of the demographics that follow the game religiously and has played it since he was 5. And that white men like me can't be counted on to by tickets to futbol matches in the future if the Gold Cup returns here??? Even more unreliable for a 15 game MLS season...WTF! Say it ain't so Joe! This isn't Houston circa 1979 and Bum Philips isn't your coach anymore Oliver! FYI amigo mio, Rockets fans in Clutch City are found outside of black men that dial 713 and the soccer fan in Houston exists way beyond Latinos from CONCACAF nations.
Jeez....Houston has pinned its collective hopes in landing the beautiful game on this line of demographic thinking on sports culture? :(
