ummm actually you still have to agree to personal terms with SWP, not that it should be much of a problem

"The Special One" has already made plans with SWP, bet the house on it

Does this make Joe Cole the odd man out?

Any chance he goes out on loan somewhere?

Not at all. It sets up a perfect 3 man rotation for the AM role with Robben, Duff or SWP sitting every 3rd game. This is an excellent signing. SWP is quality. Huge blow for City.

I expect Cole to challenge Tiago for the left sided CM role.

where does Essien play then? ;)

I think there will always be injuries, etc.

We started last season with a four man middle of Makalele-Lampard-Smertin-Geremi

You mean the right side? Lamps usually plays the leftCm role

Here's what Jose says about SWP:

He is one of the best players in England," Mourinho told Sky Sports News.

"He is young and he has space for development and he has the qualities that everyone is looking for in a modern footballer, he is quick, he is intelligent, he is creative, he can break by himself and shape the balance of the team.

"With him Joe Cole, Arjen Robben, and Damien Duff we have a fantastic group of wingers to compete to give us the best every other match and with him we will not have the kind of problems like we had last season when Robben was injured and Duff was injured.

"This season with the World Cup in the summer, there will be a lot of friendlies for national teams, and with five competitions we need this balance we have it in every other position, and we didn't have this balance without him so we got him and I am very happy."

Funny Dave, I just posted the same quote in the transfer thread. :D

Seems we will see a bit of rotation on the wing but in a good non-Ranari way, me thinks..."we have a fantastic group of wingers to compete to give us the best every other match"

Allow them to stay fresher and perhaps healthier if turns out true.

My question exactly. With the intro of SWP, is it really worth the 25+ million pounds for this guy when Chelsea already has a stacked midfield? It seems like money down the drain if both are signed.

YES! Hopefully we will get Essien, and then we are set for the 05-06 season. ;)

The two are completely unrelated. One is a Cm one is a winger, what's changed?

Joe Cole.

It is kind of related.

IF Joe is no longer needed as a back-up winger will he be used in the centre of midfield?

I hope so, Joes become one of my favorite players on the team. But at the same time theres a lot of teams Jmwill want to play with 3 true CMs together, how often do you really want to see Tiago out there? I would be ok with Never.

Two questions I know a few Cheslea fans would gladly answer for me:

1)Why is SWP such an expensive player? With practically zero big game experience, how can he demand such a high transfer fee? I mean, he is good, but 20 mil good?

2)With your midfield now with SWP alongside Lampard, Robben, Makalale, Joe Cole, and Duff (among many others) is paying another 25+million pounds for Essien worth it? It is quite obvious that money is no concern in this club, it seems that if Essien is transfered you will have many top class players riding the bench. People have said that "well its a long season." You're really going to tell me that a world class player would want to playing these conditions? I mean if Essien is transfered, he's going to want to play alot. A condition of what I like to call "Real Madrid Syndrome" could appear where in the team has too many superstars and becomes worse for it. Obviously you would want as many top players on your team but it seems like "the special one" would rather gobble all of them up.

-He's English
-Chelsea is always charged a premium. He'd probably go in the £15-17 range if Chelsea wasn't involved.
-Ask yourself this: who better? Cronaldo or SWP? Cronaldo has a bigger upside but SWP had a better season last year. Do you think £20 for Cronaldo is too much?

2)With your midfield now with SWP alongside Lampard, Robben, Makalale, Joe Cole, and Duff (among many others) is paying another 25+million pounds for Essien worth it? Essien, if he comes, will share the three midfield spots with Lampard, Makelele, Tiago, Jarosik, and Geremi. No one wants to see Jarosik or Geremi in a meaningful game. So yeah, Essien would be much needed.

And no need to worry about Chelsea becoming a Real Madrid. Mourinho's policy is to buy young up-and-comers who are hungry for trophies and hungry for European experience. Figo, Beckham, Ronaldo, Zidane, and even Owen are all guys who reached their peak BEFORE they moved to Real. All of our young guns (Robben, Joe Cole, Del Horno, SWP, and Essien) have yet to reach their peak.

As Bluemen Groupee said, the difference between Chelsea and Real Madrid is the fact that we tend to buy players who, while unquestionably talented, have won a smaller number of trophies, and often have played for relatively smaller clubs. Where we have bought Del Horno, SWP, and possibly Essien, if Madrid had similar needs they would probably have looked into the likes of Zambrotta, CRonaldo(not that we would have sold), and Ballack. The first trio will probably be happy in a rotation system, while the second three would have more difficulties adapting.

As much as I hate to admit it, these are BOTH valid points. The predicament youve described above is known as "rich mans problems".

There will inevitably be some sour faces over lack of playing time, especially with the high expectations these players are bringing to the Bridge. Sure, there are enough games for everyone, but the Champions League Semifinal and the first round of the Carling Cup are not nearly the same. So while the players may ultimately find that there all getting first team football, the quality and importance of the matches they play will ultimtaely differ. And that will lead to some bitter players.

So what Im trying to say is that I (reluctantly) agree with you.
