I think you are too young, you only know recent players.

You put Cech in as one of the best goalkeepers, after one season, yet you leave Lampard out?
Strange.

Question: why only the Premiership, why only the past 12 years? I mean, 10 of each position from just 12 years is bound to produce weak lists.
TOP 10 PREMIERSHIP GOALKEEPERS EVER: Peter Schmeichel, David Seaman, Petr Cech, Carlo Cudicini, Jerzy Dudek, Shay Given, Tim Flowers, Nigel Martyn, Fabien Barthez, Paul Robinson
Fabien Barthez?!?!? Paul Robinson?!?!?
Mark Bosnich was better in his Villa days than either of those two. And Jerzy Dudek had one great season followed by two mediocre ones. You might as well throw in Alex Manninger on that basis.
Ed de Goey was better value than both of them as well.
Robinson may one day make himself a place in a list of this nature, but not anytime soon.
TOP 10 PREMIERSHIP DEFENDERS EVER: Rio Ferdinand, Jaap Stam, John Terry, Tony Adams, Gary Pallister, Ashley Cole, Gary Neville, Jamie Carragher, Sol Campbell, Graeme le Saux
Where's Steve Bruce? Where's Nigel Winterburn? Where's Stuart Pearce?
These lists are just "ten people I've heard about more than others".
TOP 10 PREMIERSHIP MIDFIELDERS EVER: Ryan Giggs, Patrick Vieira, Steven Gerard, David Beckham, Roy Keane, Paul Scholes, Steve McManaman,
Joe Cole, Emmanuel Petit, Robert Pires
JOE COLE!?!?!? He's had one productive season in six years of trying. McManaman was unplayable in his early days, but that hardly puts him into a list of the greatest ever Premiership midfielders. And Petit wasn't a great midfielder in his own right (certainly not amongst the greatest in the past 12 years), he was a great partner for Patrick Viera. Without him there was little about Petit to excite any particular recognition.
Where's Marc Overmars? Where's Paul Ince? Where's Peter Beardsley?
TOP 10 PREMIERSHIP STRIKERS EVER: Alan Shearer, Ruud van Nistelrooy, Michael Owen, Wayne Rooney, Eric Cantona, Thierry Henry, Dennis Bergkamp, Les Ferdinand, Andy Cole, Teddy Sheringham
Argh.
Robbie Fowler.
Robbie. ********ing. Fowler.
How long have you been watching English football? This list could make a stronger man than I weep with anguish. Where's Matt Le Tissier and Gianfranco Zola? Wayne Rooney?!?!? He's barely out of nappies, he's had a couple of patches of spell-binding form and he's one of the ten greatest strikers of the past 12 years? You might as well chuck Kevin bloody Gallen in, he was a belter for QPR for almost several minutes.
TOP 10 PREMIERSHIP MANAGERS EVER: Sir Alex Ferguson, Arsene Wenger, Jose Mourinho, Gerard Houllier, Kenny Dalglish, Rafael Benitez, George Graham, Gianluca Vialli, David O'Leary, Steve McLaren
You can't have a list of 10 here. You can have a list of two. Arsene Wenger and Alex Ferguson. The rest are also-rans.
My word, it's been a long time since I was actually affronted by something someone has posted on an internet message board, but Jesus ...

Agree with everything you say there MC, apart from one thing. Joe Cole has only had half a productive season out of Six years of trying :D

Actually, yes. That's a very good point.

I agree with everything Matt has posted. The question is how do we rescue this thread? Will we continue to slag off the creator, or should we alter the criteria to make it a top 5, perhaps narrow it down to top 3? I would imagine everyone will agree on the usual faces, but it will be interesting to see who the arguments start over. Let the discussion commence.

Well there's always the "this has been done a million times already and usually better than this, let's just leave it" option.
But in the absence of that proving likely, I'll give you the top three strikers:
Shearer, Fowler, Bergkamp.
That's right - no Henry. Which settles at which point and over whom the arguments will start.

I couldn't care less about the exclusion of Henry. However, I disagree with your three and I would select Shearer, Cantona and Bergkamp.

How Paul Kitson is not in the top three I do not know. Best defender was and always will be Ramon Vega though.
Although Southall surely deserves an honorary mention in the top 10 keepers. For a fat bloke especially he was brilliant.

That's a non-starter though. Shearer and Fowler are not even up for debate, it's literally an embarrassment to anyone involved in trying. So you want Cantona because you share the Mancs faintly desperate veneration of a player who, whilst pivotal to them at that time, was nothing remotely notable in a wider context (as was demonstrated beyond doubt every time he took to the field in Europe and by the totally non-existent impact of his departure). Fine - then it's Shearer, Fowler, Cantona in your estimation.
Silly, but it's your choice.

Whe i first read Matt Clark insisting on Fowler i thought "No Way", but then i thought some more and thought, actually yes, how easy we forget.
Forget the useless, fat overweight, shell of former self Robbie Fowler that trundles around aimlessly nowadays, the original Robbie Fowler was a joy to behold, i would certainly put him in my top 3, that 4 minute hattrick against Arsenal was outrageous. Unfortunatley he has never been the same since he got pushed out the exit at Liverpool, i honestly think that move away broke his heart.
Anyways ill give a top 5 for strikers
Shearer, Zola, Fowler, Henry and (gulp - cant believe im going to say this) Andy Cole

Non-existent impact of his departure? The only two times United lost the EPL title in the 90's in when he was suspended and the year immediately after he retired ;)
What have Fowler and Shearer done in a wider context? Okay, Shearer did the business for England. How about the fact that Andy Cole scored more than Fowler AND did it in a "wider context", he won a European Cup. But it's not even up for debate

He was simply and unobtrusively replaced by Paul Scholes, who is twice the player Cantona was, just without the showboating and the borderline retarded public actions and utterances. Within little more than a year of his departure United, with Paul Scholes as their attacking fulcrum, they were on their way to the Treble. In other words, not until they weaned themselves of the misplaced sense of dependance on Cantona did they actually scale the heights they aspired to.
But it's not even up for debate.
Of course not, like I said. It would just be a pitiful embarrassment to all concerned. I refuse to countenance such wilfull stupidity.
