Ah, Martin Tyler. Now there's a foreigner I wish MLS could sign!

ok.. i agree w/ chino re max bretos and the
rest of the FSW commentating crew...
but a hunger strike...(tongue in cheek)..no
I dont know why FSW does not use the home
nation productions....?
EPL... no-one would ever accept Bretos doing
the PBP... expats would not pay for his
bantor...
LaLiga..Sky has the rights to la liga in Britain.. but
according to the rights agreement in the
US.. they can only get the 3rd choice
match... which in essence means we will
never see Real Madrid or Barca... unless
its a totally meaningless match...therefore
the only commentary team would be Bretos
UEFA CUP.. this one is the one that bothers me the
most... these games ARE available to UK
terrestrial broadcasts... so why we have to
endure the Bretos commentary is beyond
me...
Bundesliga..Again... previously we had the expertise
of Toby Charles... a legend in the broadcast
boothe...yet we have to endure the
mumbling of alan hopkins.....this i do not
understand....you would think it would be
in the best interests to have seasoned
commentator to commentate on this
league.. yet we have to endure the whining
hopkins...
MLS CUP... honestly i dont care... if the US
high school crowd thinks he is good..then
albeit.. i dont watch it...
I give credit to ESPN to giving the Nats to the best
US commentator JP Delacamera... no US
commentator comes close.... all my euro-expats
think he is definitely the best of all the US
pretenders....thats the style to go with...
but the best kudos go to Setanta...
they showed all the last euro matches from the
BBC... pregame..halftime..and postgame...
well worth the money..... now that was a
quality broadcast....

what bugs me about FSW is that they air a promo spot saying something like their the home of the UEFA Cup well how can that be since they only show like 1 game every couple of months.

I suspect that if the announcer had an english accent but was actually reading soup recipes during the game you would consider it fine commentary.
If you want to hear english accents the BBC now has a cable channel.

Sounds like you hang out with a bunch of morons. Not knowing the language and deciding that is the play by play you want to hear is ignorant, not knowledgable. If your so called "knowledgable soccer people" actually could understand the commentary of these stations they would see very quickly that they are not getting anything more in the way of substance. If anything the commentary is worse. Bretos and Hopkins do just fine.
And to assert that the facts they gather could be discovered on Google in 10 minutes is beyond absurd. I know. I help run one the ultimate football links sites on the planet. And finding out all the facts and information they gather would take a lot more than just a few google phrases to uncover.

Well, I do this sometimes and I must say the fact that I can't understand when they say something stupid is a plus. In fact, I don't even notice when they say something stupid. That's a definite plus. I had no idea thinking so made me a "moron".

Uh, it's not absurd. It's called exaggerating to make a point.

This thread is great. All of you BS veterans don't know what you're talking about.
BTW, I haven't eaten since breakfast. Out of solidarity I'll continue the hungry strike with you until lunchtime.

There is a big difference between telling me you listen to Spanish announcers because you don't want to hear any commentary and insinuating that commentary you do not understand is better than commentary you can understand.
Uh, in this case it goes WAY beyond exaggeration. The facts those guys dig up on a variety of leagues and literally hundreds of players take a lot of real time and effort. I can assure you our esteemed poster has never once stepped behind the mike as prepared as these guys are to announce the game. Yet he's oh so willing to be hyper critical.

of course you dont have to know spanish to
enjoy the commentary....
most spanish styles basically immitate the
european style except with more emotion..
you dont hear the ramblings on in a spanish
commentated match... like bretos and hopkins
if you can identify that they are saying the names
of the players... you can enjoy a spanish
commentated match...
**********
just because a british accent is doing the
commentary doesnt mean it is better...the
brit that has starting doing some of the PBP
on the spanish matches is horrible.... every time
he intro's a premiership match he calls it the
"PREM"... i want to slap him every time he says
that
***********
bretos and hopkins are terrible... i dont care how
many high school posters are for this duo... im
around football people all the time, from all nations
and 99% think they are crap also...
**********
in a perfect world switch JP delacamera over to
fsw.. and bretos and hopkins to the mls...
that would suite me just fine..

"insinuating that commentary you do not understand is better than commentary you can understand..."
Ahhh...now you're starting to catch on. This is it exactly. That's how bad Bretos and Hopkins are. Not having to hear them makes the broadcast more enjoyable by a factor of at least ten. They ruin the experience. I routinely turn off games that I would have otherwise enjoyed simply because I can't take their cackling anymore.
Unintelligible announcers are preferable provided they have some sense of the rhythm of the game and understand it well enough to discern when something of importance is happening.
When Andres Cantor raises his voice I look up because I know something dramatic is happening. When Max Bretos raises his voice it means nothing. His inflections are in no way related to what is happening on the pitch. He will scream over anything, no matter how inconsequential, while the best runs/passes/tackles of the game go without remark.
And his goal call, or should I say "Gal!" call is one of the single-most irritating auditory experiences I have ever encountered. When I see the ball hit the back of the net I immediately hit the mute button and don't dare bring the sound up again until I see that play has restarted.

- Don't blame me. Every moment I spend listening to Max Bretos I become just a bit more stupid.
"Nevermind Max's actual knowledge of the Argentine League."
- What Max knows about the Argentine league anyone could know after 10 minutes of Googling. What he doesn't know about the game itself couldn't be taught in 10 years.
"Let's just be thankful that we can see soccer from around the world and enjoy it"
- I am. I've only just moved to an area where I could get FSN. I had to subscribe to a premium package to get it, but it's worth it. Imagine my joy upon tuning in to my first ever live Bundesliga match, only to discover that instead of Alan Fountain I was being treated to Allen Hopkins. *shudder*
"(BTW, it's "hunger striker," not "hungry strike.")
- Hehe. Funny typo. :) (Stooping to typo insults = not funny, btw :( )
"dude
just start by changing your diet
no need to strike
maybe all fiber to get you nice and cleaned out
after that you could always spend a month at a "home" to soothe your nerves
then some "pills" to help you make it through each day after that
hiring a "nurse" could be of some use if those things dont quite fix the "problems" entirely for you"
- Looks like someone has just "discovered" the sarcastic "use" of the quotation "mark". Congrats.
"btw - you wont find any BBC calls of "EPL" matches. We get announcers hired directly by the Premier League on Fox Sports World. In fact, the BBC dont even cover the Premiership in England! If you're gonna be an Anglophile or Eurosnob - sort your facts out. And its Premiership - not EPL."
- Another trifling nitpicker. Wtf cares?
"Never seen an MLS match on TV have you? You would have nothing to complain about if you had."
- They are bad, as well. They shriek instead of babble. But the saving grace in that instance is that the gap between the level of play and the quality of commentary is not so great. The name Figo does not belong in the mouth of Allen Hopkins. Ty Keough and Preki is not so offensive.
"No use of complaining at all since it wouldn't do any good. Period."
- I disagree. It is the consumer's right, nay, obligation to complain. I don't want broadcasting of the European leagues to die on the vine as a result of amateurish production. The knowledgable soccer people I know still listen to matches on the Spanish language stations despite not knowing a word of Spanish. This does not augur well.
1. By the title of the thread I thought someone was going to eat until they literally exploded or until their demands were met. I'm thoroughly disappointed.
2. How did Figo fare against MLS players recently?
3. It's been said before, but I'll repeat: be thankful there's a plethora of soccer on TV in the USA.
4. If it's that bad, hit the mute button and pop in some nice background music.
5. If it's that bad, hit the mute button and because you're so knowledgeable already about soccer you don't really need anybody's commentary.

2. How did Figo fare against MLS players recently?
Point taken. Nonetheless, MLS v. La Liga would not go nearly so well as USA v. Portugal did. The best sides in football are the club sides, not the national teams. But that is another topic.
4. If it's that bad, hit the mute button and pop in some nice background music.
The crowd noise is part of the ambience of the game. And I am often doing something else while watching the match and I need to hear the match being called so ad not to miss anything. Besides, a good announcer is part of the entertainment, and there is no reason FSW viewers should be deprived of that when there are a plethora of qualified candidates ready and available to displace Heckle and Jeckyl.
6. Can I collect your Darwin Award for you?
That one has already been used, you unoriginal hillbilly. Go find a new routine.

Calm down, everyone.
This is a silly thread.
I can't stand Max Brrrrrrretos myself, but I'm not going to lose any meals over him. Unless, of course, he makes me upchuck. Which is not entirely out of the realm of possibility.

I really enjoy listening to Max and Allen. I would be very upset if they left. They keep me interested in games that I normally wouldn't ( I am watching Woman's Gold Cup Canada v. Haiti. It is 7-1 as I type). Just enjoy the games, I love soccer and I can sense the love from Max and Allen and that is what matters.
There is one announcer I don't like, but I don't remeber his name. I just can't unerstand a word he says. He has thick Spanish accent. But no complaints.

Max Bretos couldn't keep me interested in a WNT game if Brandi Chastain was going down on Mia Hamm in the center circle.
