Newcastle sign Emre

Newcastle sign Emre!
By Rob Stewart ( 25/06/2005)

Belozoglu Emre, the Turkish international midfielder, last night announced he had agreed to make a £4 million move from Internazionale to Newcastle.

"I'm a player of Newcastle now and I believe that I will be very successful there," said Emre after talks in Istanbul with Newcastle manager Graeme Souness.

"Newcastle United are one of the biggest teams in Britain and their offer was very attractive, that's why I chose to be with them.

"I'm going to a well-established and large club; I'm very happy for it. Of course, having Galatasaray's ex-manager [Souness] at Newcastle was another strong factor in my decision."

Emre, 24, started his career at Galatasaray - where he won the UEFA Cup in 2000 - and he is now expected to fill the vacancy on Newcastle's left flank, which was created by French winger Laurent Robert's move to Portsmouth.

He has been seeking a £60,000-a-week salary, a figure that apparently proved prohibitive to Everton, who were said to be among several suitors for the services of a player often described as a midfield schemer.

"Many teams, including Turkey's Fenerbahce, approached me but I have always said that I wanted to play in Europe for many years to come," Emre added.

"I am still very young, I do not want to go back to Turkey so soon, as I have a lot to do yet."

On the back of the journal this morning it say that the deal has stalled over emre's personal terms

Some media apparently jumped the gun on this one.

Here's an article from teamtalk that says it'll all be completed by Wednesday.

Magpies facing Emre wait (http://www.teamtalk.com/teamtalk/News/Story_Page/0,7760,2483_540677,00.html)

Belozoglu Emre's possible move from Inter Milan to Newcastle is not expected to be completed until the middle of next week.

The 24-year-old Turkey midfielder has been tipped to move to St James' Park this summer, although it is understood his Italian club have not yet accepted an offer.

Three other Premiership teams are interested in the player but Magpies boss Graeme Souness flew to Turkey earlier this week in an attempt to tie up a deal to bring the player to Tyneside.

However, any deal is not expected to be completed until at least Wednesday, according to Emre's agent Ahmet Bulut.

Bulut said: "We have no agreement with Newcastle. They must first agree terms with Inter Milan.

"We have four other offers with English clubs - all in the Premiership - but they must first talk to his club. We are waiting for next week."

If Newcastle do agree a fee with Inter, Emre's wages could also be a stumbling block after the club recently signed Scott Parker on a contract reported to be worth £55,000 a week.

Emre, however, is quoted in Turkish newspaper Hurriyet revealing his desire to move to Newcastle. Although the move may not be finalised, the player ruled out a transfer back to his native Turkey.

..

Emre could fill the position vacated by Laurent Robert on the left of midfield, with Newcastle also linked with possible swoops for Real Madrid's Luis Figo and Fulham's Luis Boa Morte.

Mido was the king of announcing deals before they happened. I'll wait for something other than "Belozoglu Emre, the Turkish international midfielder, last night announced he had agreed to make a £4 million move from Internazionale to Newcastle." Even then, I'll wait 'til he passes the medical.

Thx,

Jay!

Newcastle's Shola Ameobi said this about Emre:

"I'm also keeping my fingers crossed that the manager convinces Inter Milan's Emre to join Newcastle. I believe they are having talks at the moment and I will be thrilled if he returns from Turkey with his signature. I've played against Emre a few times and I've been very impressed by him. He's only small but he's extremely sharp and he wil be a fantastic buy if we can get him."

Newcastle-online has following quotes from Souness;

"We still hope to do a deal with Emre - we want him and the boy wants to join us. But we haven't come to an agreement with him yet.

"He's one player on my list. He can play wide left, through the middle or off the front. He's a good player who can play in a number of positions."

I don't know if Souness plans on playing him out left. The rumors that NUFC are pursuing Boa Morte have heated up again over the weekend. Some have even suggested that Newcastle has made a bid.

According to newcastle-online, the problem right now is not Emre or NUFC, but Inter who are trying to squeeze the Toon for more money.

It looks like the deal is really close, but definetly not a done deal yet (Inter dragging their heels). It'd be really nice having him on our side. Let's hope Souness can get the deal done.

No, sadly its not that simple. We need two strikers and a defender or two. A new left wing (to replace Robert) would help as well, that way Souness will be less tempted to play Emre out wide.
