it's a world power. soccer wise it means that they have a high reputation for winning and can actually get it done

here I'll say it...
Mexico will probably win the next WC held in North America. Definatly win it the Next time its held in Mexico.
You heard it hear first.
Don't know if that makes us a powerhouse, but it puts us at level with all countries not named Brazil

NO. Mexico doesn't carry the same weight when it travels outside of Azteca. When Brazil, Argentina, England, France and to some extent Germany, Spain and Italy, play abroad they're usually the favorite. Mexico is only the favorite when it plays in the SW United States, the Caribbean Islands and certain Central American nations.
I support El Tri, I've supported them for 18 years; however, I think Mexico is among the great second class with the likes of holland, Colombia, US, Portugal, Belgium, Turkey, Switzerland, Norway, Sweden, Greece (even though they just won Euro 2004) and the Czech Republic.
I cheer for El Tri everytime they take the field and can't wait for a team to perform as well as El Tri did in France 98. Those were fun times!

The title of this thread may attract a looooooot of trolling gringos.
Anyway, I wouldn't call us a "top world power." For that you'd have to have won a World Cup or be a team which consistantly fields teams of top players.
We have some top players but don't exactly always have a team full of "stars" like some countries can do. We are a respectable futbol team no doubt, but not a top powerhouse. Rarely is El Tri brushed aside, usually we give any team a good run for its money if we don't win the game. That's the sign of a good team, but not a great one. Yet we can proceed and move forward but big steps need to be taken in domestic futbol (FMF hint hint) and more common sense applied to La Seleccion.
This is the way it is right now.
Our press is part of the problem they are out of touch. There's this stupid writer on ESPNdeportes that was writing during the Copa of how well we were playing that it was all so hunky dory even though we barely scraped by Argentina and Ecuador and now today the b!tch has a article entitled "De Vuelta a la Realidad" !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!????!?!?!?

To come close to even be considered a powerhouse you gotta win the big one (WC) once atleast. Mexicans gotta realise their national team is just medicore at best, they might squeez a win here and there against a sub23 version of brazil but in the end they just arent that good. Mexicans by far are the most vocal when it comes to backing up their country but their is NOTHING to backup. I wish they all just let the mexican players relax and just play the game instead of the mexican press always putting this burden like they are the best team in the world and they have to beat everyone and anyone in a convincing way.

Yes we are vocal we Love Mexico.... There is "nothing" back up??!? What a complete d!ckhead we have here, are you saying the whole country/culture/history/futbol history is worthless? Nothing? You deserve my insult unless you clarify yourself "Mikey"

I agree with this at least. The burden and pressure is unfair. We the fans just ask for a coach who will use more common sense sometimes.

Dmike you are on thin ground. I know that you think that the Mexican posters don't have a brain so maybe it would be best if you sat this one out.

thats not true look at the french they were still considered a power house before they won the wc in 98. Or holland theyve never won the big one (came very close though) but theyre still a power house. Btw the US isn't a powerhouse either and theyll never become a powerhouse.

Regional maybe. Globally no.
You probably have to win a tournament (WC, Copa America) that means something and maintain consistency. Here's my view
1st tier powerhouses:
Brazil
Argentina
France
Germany
Italy
2nd tier:
England
Holland
Denmark
Mexico
Colombia
Uruguay

england and holland i would consider 1st tier because they have kept going strong, sure they havent won any major tourneys recently but they havent been getting last place or anywhere near it and both nations have come out with some excellent players (eg england:beckham, owen, scholes, rooney. holland: van nistelrooy, davids, van der sar)

No not a powerhouse, but we are I feel on the verge of 1st tier. One of things that holds Mexico back is the lack of players playing abroad in one of those European leagues. It's maybe never going to happen with all the cash money being toss around the MFL. So my thing has always being maybe the only way to resovle this is to bring the level of the MFL to the level of one those leagues.

if we want for the NT to become a powerhouse, we have to work with our fuerzas basicas. if we just go out to South America and get players, we will never become one. why do they put this ridiculous high prices on soccer players? if we want them to go to europe, the directivos have to make sacrifices in order for european teams to purchase them.

Question:
Do you, as supporters of the Mexican National team consider the United States to be a "powerhouse"? You could base your answer regarding Mexico as a powerhouse on this answer based on these team's history over the last ten years, as the two teams are fairly equal (althought the edge does seem to belong to the EEUU at present, (not a troll))
Opinions to consider:
Would Mexico qualify for the World Cup out of Conmebol? UEFA?
How many teams are power houses? 5? 10? 20?
There are clearly other things to consider. Certainly Mexico is a regional powerhouse, the top or second to top team. I would say Mexico is close, but not a world power at present based on how I feel they would fare against teams that consistently are in the later rounds of international tournaments in the past six or 8 years. (Brazil, France, England, Holland, Germany)
