and if the US comes in 2nd or 3rd (only with some complicated activity in other groups) in their group, they will be playing a quarterfinal in houston at reliant stadium.

My question is... are they gonna close the roof to keep the temperature down? have they done this for other games played in the summer?

Well, this is the one time I can think it appropriate for me to hope the US comes in 2nd instead of first!

btw, how cool would a Mexico vs US quarterfinal be? it's a possibility if mexico wins their group and US comes in 3rd (with more points than 3rd in group b) or if mexico and US come in 2nd in their groups.

An aside: how good is the air conditioning in reliant? When I went in the metrodome in minneapolis it was almost hotter inside than it was outside.

Well no offense and not do deny you a chance at seeing the US play, and a USA v. Mexico Quaterfinal would be exciting (although it would be a better final), but we should win our group. If we finish third in the group we are in there isn't much reason to show up for the next round. Plus on a purely selfish note I have tickets to the two games in Seattle, against Cuba and Canada, we would have to lose or draw one or both to finish third. Yikes are you really hoping for that? I really hope the US doesn't play Mexico in Houston. Talk about a non home field for the US.

i am not advocating that the US gamble on 3rd so i can enjoy a live soccer game :)

I am saying that in the unlikely and unfortunate event that the US doesn't win their group it would really kick ass for me personally because i would get to see them live :)

An aside: how good is the air conditioning in reliant? When I went in the metrodome in minneapolis it was almost hotter inside than it was outside. If it's a full house (69,000), then it's still a little warmer than some people would like, but it's pretty comfortable. When you have a smaller crowd, then it's plenty cool enough for most people's tastes. I've been there once for a crowd of around 8,000 and several times for crowds in the 18,000-20,000 range and it was very comfortable (if you like things on the cooler side).

Btw, the US played Mexico in front of a full house at Reliant for a friendly a couple of years ago and the consensus was that the crowd was probably about 60/40 (Mexico/US). IIRC, it was voted as the USSF's "Best Soccer Crowd" in the US for that year.

Yeah.. I'm hyped for the games here in Houston. Just won a set of tickets from the Glenn Davis Soccer Hour last night. Hope to see some good matches.

That was you...right on amigo. You my boy Blu! ;)...had to say that ya know.

I'll be there. Perhaps on the field. That Jamaica-el Tri match should have an insane atmosphere with all the drums, horns and whistles from each side. This is where segregated seating MUST be established in the neophyte U.S. soccer culture IMHO. Only in the United States...perhaps Canada is there a complete lack of understanding when it comes to seating for international football. Its not martial law that is needed and yet its done very easily for college gridiron each season. Putting OU and UT students together is unthinkable in our American football culture...so why is it any different in association football. The atmosphere is purer with traditional seating like how it's been done for over 100 yers now at the international stage.
All it takes is for a handfull of drunk Mexicans and Jamaicans to mix it up in the stands and the Houston and U.S. media would have a field day with the beautiful game! Could also scare the bejesus out a conservative man like McNair and have him leave soccer to a different promoter at a different venue. I would just hate for a pr!ck like Jim Rome to have his "take" on Houston and the beautiful game.

Thanks! I really hope Glenn Davis gets a few more hours each week. You can't ask that many questions.

We can solve the Mexican Vs Jamaican drunk problem, sell Miler Light and Red Stripe, roll a fattie and have everyone chill out! J/K
I really hope to see that match too. It should be crazy and exciting. I'm going to wear my US NAT jersey and take my Mexico flag!
BTW, jim Rome is the biggest flip flopper in the US media. Just look at his take on Neckcar..errrr Nascar! Give him 2 years and a strong World Cup showing by the US NAts. He will be flopping like a hardheaded catfish!

LOL!!! :) :) :) Glad I had just put down my coffee. Funny thing is you are more right than you know!

Blu you need to get you a Alamo flag instead of the Mexican flag amigo mio. The Alamo flag is actually Texas's first flag as a Republic. Created by a Mexican citizen, SFA, it is the traditional Green/White/Red tricolor but with 1824 replacing the Aztec eagle w/serpent and cactus crest. It really is a very cool looking flag IMHO. Let's the Mexicans remember the whole story on Tejas and not just the 1950's John Wayne version of it.

If and when Houston gets an MLS franchise again and a team can actually take to the field I would like to see our captain use the Alamo flag as the captain's armband. Like Marquez or Ronaldinho wears the Catalan province flag as Barca's captain. Anyone ever notice that for FCB. I always look at the captain's armband to see if any other clubs make a special effort to celebrate their state or province. Globally I have only recognized a few...some German sides show some regional pride.
I would love to beat FC Dallas to the punch. The rest of MLS for that matter. I think it would be cool if the clubs had their state flag or something historical that allows history to soak into the clubs sense of being.

And yes Glenn needs to have a two hour show so callers can just chat a little longer instead of being hurried off many times. I called in about Donovan one night and wanted to talk about other a-mids that have transfered from the Americas to Europe and how if it doesn't work out immediatley than the loan out process is a good option to take. Next thing I knew Glenn was back on Donovan's girlfriend and why he's back in California.

I forgive him for that. after all, i think ALL of us would be happy to be on Donovan's girlfriend.

It's only third.

i totally must have read the schedule wrong.I could have SWORN that the late game was C2/B2.

i was wrong folks. it is highly unlikely that the US will be here. they will have to get 3rd in their group and have more points than 3rd in group A. even then, they will not face mexico here unless mexico comes in 2nd in Group C.

well, it's still possible if we come in 3rd above the group a 3rd, and mexico comes in 2nd. very unlikely though. i can't see us not winning our group

Was it really about 60/40? I don't remember it being like that at all. Maybe I just happened to be in the wrong place, but even walking in and out of the stadium, it didn't seem like a 60/40 crowd.

Maybe I just happened to be in the wrong place, but even walking in and out of the stadium, it didn't seem like a 60/40 crowd. It was definitely a pro-Mexico crowd, but 60/40 was what I recall from the discussions at the time and I believe the good pro-US presence was part of the reason that it won the USSF's award as the "Best Soccer Crowd" for that year. Just going by the volume of crowd reactions (and unfortunately, there were no goals to provide the loudest reactions), I think that breakdown seemed about right, but my impression could've just been from my perspective in the stadium as well. It's hard to get much beyond a guesstimate when the seating's mixed.
