This thread is for all posts relating to the game Grand Theft Auto:Vice City upon its release here in the United States, on October 29th, 2002. If you truly wish to be surprised and not find out stuff about the game, do NOT read this thread.

I know I'm starting this thread 4 days ahead of release date, but I have already discovered some spoilers, so I'm going to show respect to our Euro counterparts and not spoil the game for them (unless, they WISH to know ;) )

Ok, for those who wish to know more about the game, some stuff from the recently published GTA:VC Strategy Guide:

1. You can rob stores. Many of them. Stores that served no purpose previously can be robbed of money and, possibly, items.

2. You can buy outfits - there are ten in total. Changing from one to another back at a hideout can get rid of a one or two star rating. I'm a big fan of this.

3. You progress through the game with money, instead of with missions. You need around $14,000 to get from one island to the next - that's a lot in eighties cash.

4. You can buy up to 7 hideouts. Interestingly enough, hideouts with garages aren't availible unless you have the money.

5. You can buy businesses, though not at the beginning. After this happens, they can rake in your dough for you.

6. They've confirmed 99 vehicles so far. Six are boats, six are motorcycles.

7. There are no police bikes.

8. There is a Pizza delivery scooter.

9. Vigilante, pizza, and firetruck missions are handled like paramedic missions: In 'levels'. Each one comes with a reward. The Taxi one is also pretty cool, though it's the standard 100-passenger-dropoff rule.

10. Hidden packages have a unique reward - an "ultimate vehicle" that recieves 10 stars in every category. You can apparently do vigilante missions in it, too.

11. Food can be bought to regain health.

12. When you fail a mission, a taxi will appear outside the police department or hospital. This will take you back to the scene of the crime if you ask the driver nicely, where you can try the mission again.

ps2.ign.com recently did a Q and A session with one of the game's developers and someone from ign.com, and here are some of the highlights:

Q: Are the helicopters and aircraft relatively easier to fly than the Dodo?

Doug responds: The helicopters and aircraft take time to learn how to fly; there is a learning curve to be certain. But they aren't hard, in my opinion.

Q: Approximately how long is this game as in hours?

Doug responds: LONG. I estimate a good 60 hours. The other night I spent about four hours on a single mission! BURLY. I was hard stuff. It's called Death Row. Rockstar describes it as a rite of passage. I agree

Q: 2. Are cops going to pull us over for minor traffic violations? (hope not)

Doug responds: (edited) If you are in a richer part of town (like the mall) and they see you with a weapon in your hand, they will attack asap.

Q: Was the Dalorean Type Vehicle cut?

Doug responds: No. It's there. Lovely, too. Though the Porsche copy, I think it's a Comet is the fastest car in the game.

Q: Now that police can shoot out tires, does that end most car chases fairly quickly?

Doug responds: No, the cars wobble out of control but they still drive. Car chases have become very interesting.

Q: is there F bombs or nudity included in this game?

Doug responds: Swear words, yes. Nudity? Havn't seen any yet.

Q: Chatterbox was by far my favorite radio station in GTA3. How do Vice City Public Radio and K Chat compare?

Doug responds: It's great, very good stuff. I am thoroughly enjoying it. It holds up remarkably well.

Q: Is there a "Chatterbox" type of radio station?

Doug responds: Yes, several including VCPR and Chat Radion.

Q: 2) I've heard about load times before going in buildings, but how frequent are load times within the outdoors parts of the city?

Doug responds: Going in and out of AmmuNation for instance is nothing. But going inside of malls, your hotel, or Diaz's place takes about 5-7 seconds -- short loads times, in other words.

Q: 1.) Are there golf courses in the game, where you will see people actually playing golf?

Doug responds: yes. And you can ride golf carts, too.

EDITORIAL: Yes!! I can SHOOT golfers!!!

Q: how big is the first area compared to liberty city?

Doug responds: Rockstar says it's twice as big, but thet includes interiors and water channels as well. It doesn't "feel" bigger than GTA3, but they said it is...

Q: 2.Is it really bigger than GTA3?

Doug responds: According to Rockstar, the game is twice as big, but that accounts for interiors, waterways and such similr stuff.

Q: Is the map at vicecity.com the entire map or just the map of one area.

Jeremy Responds:
That's the entire map, but it's bigger than it looks.

Q: Vice City is said to be 2.5 times bigger then Liberty City, is that including the interiors or not?

Rob from Rockstar responds: Land mass alone is at least 2.5x bigger.

Q: If you HAD to decide: What, in your opinion, is the WORST aspect of the game and why?

Doug responds: Some missions are unbelievably hard, and that's both great/but frustrating. Worst? Hm... Perhaps, it's that I would want to simply do more, like swim, for instance!

Q: Sooooo... my question is... WHEN IS GTA:VICE CITY COMING TO THE PC!?!? a ballpark figure would be great...

Rob from Rockstar responds: Haven't heard of any PC plans, sorry.

Q: 1.Since the game is closed from the beginning is it still possible to fly helicopters from the start of the game?

Jeremy Responds:
Nope, you've gotta work your way into it a bit

Q: Does money play a more important role in Vice City then it does in GTA3?

Jeremy Responds:
Money has been adjusted so that you earn less money, but your dollars go farther. Since the game takes place almost 20 years ago, you have to take that into account.

Q: How many "R3" missions will there be, in addition to the Taxi Driver, Paramedic, and Vigilante missions?

Jeremy Responds:
1.) 12 types of side missions. Including ice cream trucks. =)

Q: Is it true you can rob banks!?

Jeremy Responds:
Nope, not true. Though there are other things you can rob like jewelery stores.

The greatest video game ever made.

Essentially, it's a game that lets you run amok in a city doing fun things like getting cash by robbing people, go on killing sprees for no reason, blowing sheet up, getting blow jobs for health points, driving tangs casually around town, and all around bad things to innocent people and law enforcement. It's a real family game. :D

(I'm told that there is an actual point to it if you actually play the game right, but really, there's no reason to ever even try that.)

I totally agree!

It's a game that defines the word "freedom".

You want to play the game and do missions and make progress and such? GREAT!!

You just want to tool around and shoot people and get the cops after you and cause mayhem? EVEN BETTER!!

I did #2 mostly while I had GTA3. Great stress relief to come home from work and put in the game and cause mayhem for 30 minutes. :D

I JUST PICKED UP THE STRATEGY GUIDE!!! And let me tell you....this is going to be a helluva game, game of the year, hands down. Any questions you want answered I'll look it up for you and post right away. This is awesome, I have pics and stats on every car/vehicle in the game. There is a helicopter that can go on water! A HELICOPTER, not plane! ********** YA!!!!!!!!

AndrewGK

OK :D

How many helicopters and planes are available?

MetrosSoccaFan10
27 Oct 2002, 10:45 AM
5 helicopters, including a police one, and there is a "skimmer" plane that can land in water. There is also a helicopter that lands in water. The first helicopter becomes available after about 11 missions, but only if you have the cash.

Damnit, I want to fly a chopper IMMEDIATELY  guess it means I'll have to do actual missions once I get the game :p

I skimmed the mission pages, and there are some pretty amazing missions. They are easily going to provide hours of fun. I can't wait to play! My favorite mission so far is you have to watch your bud's back while a drug deal goes down....very cool. Unfortunately, I'm not one of the priveledged where a store near me will have it tomorrow. Oh well, I guess I can wait 'till Tuesday.
Just looked through the guide again, and MAYBE I CANT WAIT!
