I did a search but I didn't see any threads linking to the trailer for the movie that's coming out later this year (August in UK; TBD in US) so I thought I'd post the link. It looks better than "The Game of Their Lives".

This looks much, much sharper than the Game of Their Lives. Just from the short trailer I can say that I will watch this movie. I has great potential. And if it is successfu and turns into a trilogy as originally planned, I hope the main character plays for the US, as if he played for Mexico, US audiences would not care about the film.

I think the kid is supposed to be this American born kid of Mexican descent who becomes a star, plays in England...

Last I read, he ends up playing for Argentina.

I think you will be dissapointed. From everything I have heard, he plays in the world cup in the third part of the planned trilogy for Mexico. Makes sense considering the review at AICN mentions his family sneaking across the border. Kind of difficult to play for a country your are not a citizen of.

GOAL! tells the story of Santiago, an Argentine immigrant in Los Angeles who is signed by Newcastle and then Real Madrid CF before representing Argentina at the 2006 FIFA World Cup finals in Germany.

If you click on The Story link it says he was born in Mexico.

Thinking about it, it makes sense that the main character plays for Argentina as Argentina is an Adidas sponsored team. Since the movie is being made in conjunction with Adidas and Fifa, the teams he goes to (Newcastle, Real Madrid, Argentina) are adidas sponsored teams. Since US and Mexico are sponsored by Nike, it would be against Adidas best interests to have him play on either of those teams. But I am telling you US would be the way to go for the American market but since this is an international film, it doesn't matter.

It's a song.

As for the personnel changes, the movie was originally to be directed by Michael Winterbottom (24 Hour Party People), starring Diego Luna and Stellan Skarsgård and produced by Lawrence Bender, who has produced all of Tarantino's films.

This site has kept up with the production, more or less: http://www.footymania.com/movies.phtml?movieID=1
