Q.E.P.D. Hernan Gaviria
I watched Gaviria play in person many times with Colombia. A tough defensive midfielder who used to alternate with "Barabas" Gomez as Leonel Alvarez' partner in protecting Valderrama and Rincon in Colombia's midfield. A tragic ending to his life.

I was in shock when I was informed last night. Much of Cali is in mourning and thousands of people went to the clinic where they were taken. I heard an interview from a reporter covering the practice and he said he saw Gaviria exhaling smoke while being attended.
I was never a big fan of Gaviria as I considered him to be excessively violent on the pitch but lately I had noticed his futbol to become less so.
I tragic end indeed.

I've always been terrified of lightning. A few years ago there was a game in Africa in which 11 players were killed by a lightning strike -- all on the same team (it must have hit the bench or something). Of course they claimed the other team's witchdoctor had caused it.

Not a nice way to leave this world.
This reminds me of a whole team being killed at a pool due to a negligent repair of one of the light bulbs.

I don't know, to die doing what you love and instantaneously... It could be worse.
BTW, Giovanni Cordoba, a very promising forward on Cali, 24 years old, has suffered grave injuries from the same bolt of lightening. Some sources say he's had 3 heart attacks since the event and doctors are afraid of possible brain damage. He is currently in intensive care.
Some other players, notably, Giovanni Hernandez, are recovering from their injuries which are not considered life-threatening.

A small story from the AP
"Cali mourned the loss of one of its soccer stars Friday, with thousands taking to the streets to follow the funeral cortege of Herman Gaviria, who died after he was struck by lightning."

A student in my class brought up the passing of the Columbia player by lightening. Which really surprised me.
I related this story to them as well. They did not beleive me.

i have the same problem, i read about that when it happened and i told everyone but no one believed me. it sounds so made up bc they all died and they all played on the same team. but i read about it when it happened and still believe it did occur.
