ahhh aussie press didn't mention it then? They must have taken the lead from the Sun's cricket coverage. After the last two weeks of bluster bravado & bullsh!t not a bo-peep about last night's game. How strange of the English red press !

well the game finished too late for them to report on it, as all of their journalists have to be tucked up in bed by 9pm on a school night.

Finally, the world returned back to normal with a victory over the Poms yesterday. Why would Trescothick send us in? Ponting couldn't believe his luck when Trescothick asked Australia to bat first. This could be the turning point we'll all look back on in 3 months time when the Aussies have once again smashed England to retain the Ashes. :D

very surprised by that since the side batting first wins day night matches much more often than the side batting second. i only caught the last 15 overs and was shocked when they asked him after the game why he chose to field! i just presumed we lost the toss.
the only thing i can think of is that the aussies had failed when batting first in the previous two matches so he thought 'why change a losing formula'.
stupid old bangers.
still - the damage was done at the top of the order, and they were still playing in normal light conditions then, so had brett lee and mcgrath come out and bowled like that with us batting first it probably wouldnt have mattered!

See how andy taus crawls out from under his rock and starts beating his chest after the saggy greens claim a win.
Was nowhere to be seen after the others games (particularly the bangladesh game).
How many times have we seen the same behaviour pattern from this clown eh

Trescothick is an abysmal captain. Put them into bat on a god wicket in boiling hot weather. Then proceed to show no imagination in the field settings . At least he did well with the bowling changes (which is something vaughan always gets wrong in one dayers).
Its a disadvantage to bat under floodlights over here so that was a big ******** up.

It's fairly common wherever you are around the world, any doubt and you always bat first. Trescothick had no idea how the pitch was going to play. That's very unusual, you would have thought he'd have got some advice from some of the other players or even former England players. Ponting and the Aussies knew it was a good wicket. Lee has to be in for the first test in my opinion.

I would imagine that the management would have looked to Harmison and Collingwood for a clue about the wicket as it is their home ground.
I didn't see the game so I can't really comment, but Flintoff is a bit annoying in these situations. I saw his dismissal on the news and he's on 40-odd only half way through the innings, all he has to do is knock ones and twos and he holes out to long-on!

i am closing the thread, starting a part II natwest series thread as this one is already 5 pages long. my thoughts are by having a new one, its easier to read, as well as more inviting for new people to jump into the coversation.
for those who think its a bad idea, too bad :)
