here's the funny headline for News of the World-
"Roo-Bish: Crack Open the XXXX - Aussies lose to worst team in the world," chortled The News of the World."

and this too
""Arrogant Australia humbled in the biggest upset in the game's history".

Bugger.

Likewise.

As for the Bangladesh win over Australia the other night, seems like too many people are taking pleasure in seeing Australia lose. When you think about it, that was an amazing comeback by the Bangladeshis, needing to average 7.5 runs per over for the last 20 overs or so.

That's definitely something to be admired.

hey, i am used to it being a NY Yankee baseball fan. people love to see the champs lose, and people also love seeing the 'davids' beat the 'goliaths'. its something that won't ever go away. a good thing from it is that this NatWest series is exciting and fun to watch- not just the final like most expected.

With "should be" as the words to be emphasized. Granted, the Aussies are going through a bit of a purple patch at the moment, and Bangladesh being what they are, let's focus on the latter.

I'm willing to see the glass as half full, and give them credit for that comeback, to produce the runs to the extent that they did in the limited time in which they did it. Credit where credit is due.

They'll be back in form by the time the formal Ashes matches start, I just have a funny feeling about this.

i've heard many things said about the aussies in the last week or so, but you are the first to suggest that they are going through a "purple patch".

wires crossed, or is this what they aussies call success these days? :D

Lack of success, more like it. What is it now, 0-for-4 in Australia's last four matches, of any format?

I think, in simplest terms, it's called a slump, plain and simple. Those of you wishing for, or confusing this with the signs of a permanent downfall, you're going to be very, very disappointed in the coming days and weeks.

oh i know that, i'm not expecting us to win the ashes, realistically, it's just that "purple patch" means a period of success. i was just being snotty :D

Something is seriously wrong with our bowling. I've been slightly worried for quite a while that Australia has the tendency to overrely on a long, strong batting lineup, which has on several occassions blasted them out of trouble when the opposition has managed to compose a competitive score. But there has always been a formidable set of bowlers behind them - McGrath, Gillespie, Kasprowitz, Lee, Warne, McGill - to balance things, and I think we've taken them for granted. Now a couple aren't firing we're really starting to feel the pinch, and the batsmen (while admittedly not stellar thus far) can't be expected to win the match off their own bat every time - particularly not during ODIs.

I certainly feel the moves in recent seasons to add more allrounders and lengthen the batting lineup has been an unwise one. But then, there's probably a reason I'm not on the board of selectors.

Apparently Shine Warne has no trouble bowling a maiden over;)

personally i've never felt that gillespie is an outstanding one day bowler, as i think he tend to bowl it a little bit too full, which leads to him being prone to conceding runs as he doesn't quite have the control of mcgrath and tends to bowl the odd very hittable delivery. when you couple this with a surprising lack of pace by his own high standards he becomes a bit impotent.

it will be a different story in the tests though, especially with three or four slips and a gully sitting there waiting for the miscued drive away from the body, the "one-day bad ball" he bowls will most likely be left alone by the batsman. has always seemed to be a much better test than one day bowler to me - dont know if the statistics reflect that.

presumably brett lee will be reintroduced asap, esp. given kaspowicz's tameness, although i doubt he'll do all that much in the one dayers either, but he needs some cricket before the tests, and of course shane warne is yet to come into the squad - and he's the only one who will actually have had any 4 day cricket before the series starts.

watson looked ok in the one game i've seen him so far, but i dont know that he's actually in the test squad is he?

hogg is rubbish and i hate him. jammy sod got 3 wickets as well.

all about mcgrath though - at 35 will he be able to play 5 tests in quick succession whilst bowling 30+ overs an innings? if he breaks down then there could be trouble for australia.
