I don't know how many people have been watching these world youth championships byt Marvell Wynne of the states has been one of the best 3-4 players I've had the pleasure of watching.

He's just turned 19 and with no real heir apparent stepping up to Lauren, I'd say it's HIGH TIME an American gets into serious contention for the Arsenal. I think Wynne is the best American in this age group, but I've been wrong before I suppose.

I've enjoyed watching him as well but he has a loooonnng way to go before we should talk about him replacing Lauren. He really needs to work on his technical abilities. Hopefully, he will leave UCLA after this tournament and start training in a professional environment somewhere.

Yoss,

Most definitely agree, but what young player has Arsene brought in lately that didn't have "loooong" way to go before we should talk about him replacing _______?

He has great pace, seems to be pretty strong, and is still very young, but I do agree technically he needs work. Then again, who would I trust to take a raw talent and turn him into a technical talent more than Arsene?

I've seen Hoyte and to me he isn't the answer. I know that Eboue deserves a long look, but Wynne just has me excited that he might be an American with real European talent.

And he very well might be. Don't get me wrong, I've been really impressed with him thus far. We just have to remember that a player's performance in some of these youth tourney's sometimes flatters to deceive.

He has great pace,

This might be the greatest understatement of all time. He can run the 200 in under 22. It ain't world class speed, but it is more than enough to cover anybody in the prem right now...

But I agree. He has been a revelation.

I've never heard of him, but I wonder if he is named after Captain Mar-Vell?

Just to follow up since I've now watched today's match agaisnt zee Germans.

Marvell looked a little more ordinary today. He didn't play poorly but seemed a little off, especially in the second half.....although to be fair the whole squad looked off in the second half.

He's actually named after his dad.

From what little I've seen so far, I think he has great athleticism, pretty good technical skills, and great upside. I'd love for him to turn pro asap at Arsenal or any other team.

If you like Marvell, you'll love Quincy Owusu Abeyie and striker Ryan Babel of the Netherlands. They are strong components of the host team. Too bad that their game will not be televised tomorrow.

We've been loving Quincy all year. Now if he can just push for a spot on the squad this year things will be great.

About Marvell, though: the guy has SERIOUS WHEELS!

Soul,

Seen both guys and agree they are both VERY talented. I liked the German Delura -sp?- that I saw today and also Schuon from Stuttgart. Lots of good young talent to watch.

Phishy,

I didn't say he's about to step into the line-up, the guy has great pace -who might actually run with....say Ronaldo?- and seems to be comfortable going forward and has shut down LMs from both Argentina and Germany. I know it's youth championship -AND NOTED IT in the initial post- but that doesn't change that he's been very impressive.

I think he has more talent, and to me would be a nice fit for us. Just my opinion, and it's all fact as far as I'm concerned.

As I said, he's got a long ways to go, but he's 19 and how many guys has Arsene signed over the past few years who were nothing but a ball of talent that he is slowly molding into a player?

You can't coach speed, and he's got it in spades.

Someone will take a flyer on him. Might be tough getting him to England, what with the work permit issue and all. Unless they count U-20 caps and I'm not aware of it...

My hope would be that one of the Dutch clubs would take a chance on him. They seem to do a good job at building technical ability which is what Marvell needs most right now. In any case, he is definitely exciting to watch and he needs to leave UCLA right away (assuming he wants a career in football) because he has nothing more to gain from college ball.

I thought I had that etched in my memory, but my memory of that day is a bit fuzzy!

On that note, we need to plan another Gooner Drink-a-thon, or Match Viewing if you will ;) !!
