I use my instep. What I do is, I try to make sure that my foot is 90 degrees from my leg, lean my upper body away from the kicking leg, and try to spin the ball by swinging the leg diagonally... Follow through is extremely important here.

I had trouble with this a few months ago, so I was looking around the BBC for EPL news, saw this, and watched a few, then I saw Beckham's. He covers a lot of stuff, a lot of stuff that would help any person getting into soccer .. including this free kick bit. Now, it might not help that much, it's just a bunch of little kids taking free kicks, but Beckham does it a few times and if you watch the way he does it, it teaches you a lot. Also, he tells the kids where to kick it.

Learn it from Becks (http://news.bbc.co.uk/sportacademy/hi/sa/football/video_masterclasses/newsid_3491000/3491867.stm)

After watching it, I developed my own technique, and it curves really well. I fancy taking free kicks. If you mean during games, I have this curler that Rui Costa took after he faked a defender, hit the post and the upright, it was absolutely amazing. I'll try finding it, hopefully I saved it somewhere.

Good Luck, hope I helped.

Choice of boot helps too, used to put a bit of curl on most things when i was lal but soon as i got my first T90s started havin too much curl. (also the ball makes a hell of a difference, soft skined balls roll off your foot more by delayin the contact responce givin more curve)

Way i look at it its a controled slice you want to hook it with your foot, lean in like hell kickin leg at as tighter angle u can get without fallin on ya ass, lean back for hight an cup the ball with your boot. Should effectively roll the ball on your boot givinin it the angular speed to cause it to bend.

Just remember completly different to doin it with your outside, part from you want the ball to spin as much as possible.

Just hit the ball with power around the side of the ball with either side of the foot, the idea is to put a load of side spin on the ball. TOP TIP, free kick experts reckon that if you hit the ball on the valve it moves around a lot more.
