Matthew Upson, (20), upset at the lack of first team opportunities has been (this week) training with Newcastle United in an apparent Bid by Bobby Robson to sign him in January when the "transfer window" re-opens.
No fee, at present, mentioned, or as to whether the deal will reach fruition.

Where did this come from? He's currently on loan at Reading so how can he be training with Newcastle? Please!

hmm, heard same rumour. Still seems odd.

He's currently on loan to Reading. He can't go to Toon before Jan anyway. So why burn bridges in October, when there's every chance of Arsenal first team action.

Is just possible the arrival of Cygan will have annoyed him into a stupid decision, but Keown is coming up to his 108th (ish) after all, and unlikely to make first team next season (very carefully didn't mention this one).

It was on "TeleText" (Arsenal page (501) ) on ITV yesterday.

As of 8.45am (GMT) on 24.10.02 the same article is still there. (item 6/13) page 501, ITV. Apparently the "Daily Mail" carried the article, although I haven't read it.
"Time will tell".

TEAMtalk seems to deny the rumours.

Reading's on-loan Arsenal defender Matthew Upson says he has not been training with Newcastle and still hopes to become a Gunners regular.
National newspaper reports on Tuesday stated that the versatile player, who is to stay at The Madejski for at least three months, joined up with the Magpies for a training session last week.
Upson has taken the latest potentially unsettling rumours in his stride, again adamant that his goal is to establish himself at Highbury.
He confirmed: "I've not heard anything from Newcastle and these type of rumours are quite frequent.
"I've come to Reading to get my fitness and ideally get back in the Arsenal team, so at the moment I'm concentrating on playing for Reading then going back and seeing what happens."
Newcastle are known to want more defensive cover and Upson has been in sparkling form for the Royals after a shaky start.
But Reading assistant boss Kevin Dillon added: "Matthew has not missed a day's training with us since he arrived. I don't know where this story started, but he is here for three months, although he has been playing well so maybe scouts are watching him."
