since a year ago i picked liverpool as my favorite club, not because i know anything about it, but because the greatest band ever is from the city and they have sweet kits. but id really appreciate it if you guys could help me out with whatever i need to know to get into it. i watched the end of this years season and the cl tourney, and i cant get enough. the only team ive followed extensively is rochester, a team here in america. and i hope this doesnt incite flames or whatever, but i am from the same city as the new majority owner of man u, malcolm glazer.

Man if you just started watching them now you may as well quit whilst your ahead.

They wont top those 15mins in the champions league final even if you watch them for the next 50years.

You may as well support Wigan or someone like that. Nice stadium coming together for Rochester by the way.

thanks, its taken awhile to get going. hope to have it open by the end of the season. alls we need now is like 10 million dollars, and we can get in the mls :D . btw, since we have a british sounding name, ive always thought we should have been rochester fc or something, not the raging rhinos. than again, that might come off as bad as real salt lake.

anyway, who are the big stars and what not in the league? i know henry, gerrard, vieres, howard, and not much else. any info i need to know to maybe make informed statements would be appreciated. thanks.

John Terry, PFA Player of the Year
Frank Lampard, Football writers' Player of the year.
Peter Cech, Owner of the Golden Gloves. (Least goals conceded, most clean sheets.)

Hey, you should make your own mind up as to who the best players are when you watch the games next year.

The EPL has become increasingly dominated by fewer and fewer teams as the gap between the richest clubs and poorest clubs widens. Realistically only three teams can win it next year. Chelsea, Arsenal or Man.Utd. Many people would include Liverpool but i am not convinced myself. They can raise their game to beat anyone but the EPL is a grind and about about consistency.

If you like parity in sports then the Champions League will be a much more entertaining option. A dozen teams could wind up winning that one, although the play-off format at the end means surprise champions can occur (e.g.Liverpool and Porto in last two years).

Going back to the EPL the battle to remain in the league at the end of the season (the bottom three are relegated) can often be more entertaining than the title race. This season the battle went down to the last weekend with 3 from 4 teams certain to go down. All games kicked off at the same time and during the ninety minutes all four teams were in a position of survivng at some point before the bottom team who were given no chance (West Bromwich Albion) finally stayed up.

To summarise the EPL is an entertaining league, it is probably not the best technically, but there should be a good % of entertaining matches (and a few boring ones as well but that makes the good ones seem better).

Don't they typically give you a belt for winning in Golden Gloves>>>> ;) :D

This is coming from a Liverpool fan. If you aren't going to support Liverpool, DO NOT PICK A NEWLY RELEGATED TEAM. If you are thinking about Wigan, West Ham, or Sunderland, watch them first before you decide. I made that mistake with Crystal Palace. I love Liverpool, but I wanted Palace to stay up so bad. They were so exciting to watch bevause they played every game like it was their last. And they screwed themselves in the final game.

If you are to pick a new team, I suggest going with a team from 5-15th in the tables. So you arent called a frontrunner, and that you actually have a team that will be there next year.

So yeah, teams like Newcastle, Bolton, Manchester City, Middlesbrough, Aston Villa, or teams like them.

Actually, FYI I think the Beatles were divided in their football loyalties. I'm pretty sure that Paul and Ringo were loyal Everton fans. Paul mentions it in the "Anthology" book and Ringo was from Everton. I think George might have been an Everton fan as well, if he supported any team. As for John, I'm sure he was a Liverpool/Manchester United fan. John even mentions Sir Matt Busby in one of his songs ("Dig It", off Let it Be) This would reflect the domestic backround classes normally associated with the Liverpool-Everton rivalry (Everton=Working Class, Liverpool=Middle class).

Also, Paul mentions in the "Anthology" book that the Beatles wern't very sporty at all, so if they were fans they wern't really "fans".

P.S. If you meant Gerry and the Pacemakers or Frankie goes to Hollywood, just ignore this post........ :p

Paul was Everton.

Ringo was Watford.

John was Liverpool.

Idk about George. Conflicting reports on that.

Thanks for clearing that up! Ringo was Watford? Is that club still around? Never heard of them.

John definitely was Liverpool, but I heard he was proud of ManUs success over southern/european clubs, being from the Northwest and all.........

There is a picture of George in the anthology book watching a Cup final on television with a friend......

They really are the greatest band. My two passions, the Beatles and Football...........

Rumours are none of the Beatles took that big an interest in football to be honest.

McCartney supposedly prefers Everton but none of the Beatles were big followers

Ringo and Paul followed the closest. They still are rumored to follow their clubs today.

John was a lukewarm fan, and always thought of comical responses to the "Who are you a fan of?" question. He was seen at Liverpool games.

I havent heard much about George though.

Hey, welcome. I was sort of new to the epl a while ago too. you might check out the "rough guide to liverpool fc"

http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/1843530082/anfieldonline/026-0061149-6817257

i'm sure amazon will ship to the states...

a friend of mine who is also a liverpool fan mentioned that there is an official team history out as well? i'm not sure though...

another interesting book: i purchased the "rough guide to english football", a companion book. its sort of a guidebook by the travel guide publishers. it has a little 6 page history of all of the teams in the epl, championship, league 1 and league 2. the english football guidebook came out a few years ago, so i'm not sure how up to date it is, but it has tons of interesting little facts about many of the teams as well as a few pointers on travelling to all of those stadiums. it sort of gave me a good overview of the "english game".

hope you were able to catch the liverpool chelsea game today...
