Hello all I just wanted to get your view of what SPL clubs think of MLS players? Are there any rumors of any intrest in players in this league or do they view it as a below par league. Do they all of the good players are already playing int the EPL is that why there seems to be disintrest?

There has been interest in the past. Ante Razov nearly signed with Kilmarnock before going to Spain. Dundee United almost signed Chris Armas a couple years ago but he decided to stay in MLS. Also Eduardo Hurtado was signed by Hibernian a few years agoafter he left New England but if I remember correctly his stay wasn't very long or productive. Then there was Sasa Curcic who went to Motherwell from the Metrostars back in 2000 but Curcic was already known in Europe from his time in England. Also former Metro Craig Ziadie had a trial with Livingston earlier this year but wasn't offered a contract.

It's a very different style of football, any player moving from the MLS to SPL would really need to adjust their game alot.

Its down to the player and his own style that would determine how well or badly he did.

'Captain America' Claudio Reyna did well for Rangers when he was there. About 18 months ago Rangers also had Clint Mathis on trial but (sadly I think) Rangers did not persue the option to sign him.

But you only have to look at players like Beelsey, McBride, Donovan etc to see that they have the quality to play in the SPL or any other European leagues.

Rangers were wise not to offer Mathis a contract considering how he has looked since then. I think there are a handful of MLS players that could really go on a tear in the SPL, especially considering the talent level of the non-Old Firm clubs. Someone like Donovan (if he weren't such a pansy about moving) could probably start consistently for either Old Firm side.

Reyna was a decent midfielder, passed the ball well. Rangers had better midfielders when he was there though, Van Bronckhorst, Ferguson, Tugay, Albertz so he never really shone over a long period.

Ive always thought that Reyna was a bit overated. Not coming form a Celtic supporter but as a follower of the USMNT. He seem to be a bit slow and was always under par when it was crunch time. Never been satisfied with his control of the game either at the National level.

I agree Mathis has fallen of the map a bit hasn't he? As far as Donovan I agree in thinking he would be averaging twenty goals a season in the SPL but alas he is a whiney little girl and would get the crap kicked out of him on a daily basis in Glasglow. A player I think the Old Firms should be looking at is Eddie Johnson of Dallas FC who is tearing up MLS as well as USMNT WC qualifiers.

Rangers were linked with Ryan Nelsen (might have just been a rumour). He seems to have done well at Blackburn.

Dont think donovan could handle life in the SPL to be honest, can you see him in a 2 degree celcius match in fife in january, rain snow and hail pishing down sideways with a guy that weighs about 3 times as much as him smashing him off the ball without even batting an eyelid at regular intervals. If he thought germany was a shock to the system from california he would have a heart attack in scotland. Boy is a bottle merchant too, might have talent but the cons definately outweigh the pros on that one.

I get the impression that a lot of Caribbean players have played in the SPL in recent years... are there any among them who have played in both leagues?

well you could ask the same question of spl players in europe, there's not been many of either, based on the simple fact of class, there are a few that make it in the spl from mls, but on the other hand we don't have many spl players played in other european countries, and before anyone says england is a different country, it's not really what i meant, i mean spain germany france italy etc.
not meaning to be rude but most europeans see the mls as a retirement package before they give up the game. and i have watched some of it late night on five, and there's not a lot of arrangement to their teams, and the passing is very lax.
maybe if they thought more on the tactical side they would bring more mls players to the forefront.
btw, hark at me lecturing you on teams, there's not a lot of productivity in the spl either lol

Its surprising the number of spl players go on to do well in other leagues though, you just never hear of them, jamie smith in holland for example, but england has to be counted, most players who do well up here end up in either the premiership or the first division or the coca cola cup checkered chupa chup championship or whatever the ******** its called nowadays, its the bulk of our exports.

Reyna, of course, has never been in MLS. He will be eventually, you'd guess but as of now he never has been.

That would be Ziadie, yes. He's been replaced on the Metros by a 17 year old who has done a far better job.

thats not too true though mate, by the looks of it he's on his way back to aberdeen from den haag. he had a bit of pace but seems to run out of ideas at the byline, and i'm guessing he didn't conform to total football as the dutch like to call it, without ever winnig a major trophy with it lol.
