I was at the game and I thought we played a 4-4-2, attacking on the left with convey, winning possession with the donovan, beasley, and zags hunting in a pack, and ralston and dolo staying at home. soccernet said we had three forwards? i didn't see a third forward. Wasn't that just the unbalenced 4-4-2 bruce plays or am i wrong?

I thought it was a little unbalance. Convey had the entire left side to himself.
btw - since you were at the match. any thoughts you haven't seen on BS?

I dont think we could call that anything like AC Milan's formation. We have no deep lying playmaker with those passing skills(Pirlo), and no commanding destroyer, shading to the right. Milan play wiithout wingers in their lineup, using the fullbacks as such, and Seedorf on the left cuts inside as a playmaker. I thought it was a basic 4-4-2

not quite.
---Dolo----Pope------Boca----------------------
-----------------------------------Convey-----
------------------------------------------------
----------------Zevagnin-----------------------
---Ralston--------------------------------------
----------------Donovan------------------------
------------------------------------------------
------Wolff---------------McBride---------------
------------------------------------------------
The players generally stayed in these positions, with Convey mostly having the left flank all to himself. The one play I don't have listed there is DaMarcus Beasley. And the reason I don't have down is because he played whereever the hell he wanted to.

Thats similar but:
1.Ralston plays nothing like Gattuso, and goes forward way too mch in comparison.
2.zavagnin plays nothing like Pirlo, who isnt a defensive midfielder. Zavagnin plays more like Gattuso except Gattuso drifts out laterally frequently. to cover for Cafu going forward.
When I think Milan I think
-------------Nesta-------Stam-----Maldini
-----------Gattuso----Pirlo
---Cafu-------------Kaka'----seedorf
--------------Sheva----Crespo
I know that looks funky, but Cafu attacks as muchif not more than he defends, on somedays so does Maldini. Pirlo lays deep, but he doesnt tackle nor win balls often, thats gattusos job. they may be the hardest lineup to map out on paper.

yea sorry I was responding to the basic 442 comment :)
as for AC Milan...watching them through champion's league I didn't even think they had a set formation...beyond the 2 central defenders and Sheva uptop.
