I've used a digital dictaphone/voice recorder (Olympus VN-480) for the 3 games I've recorded.

Pros: It's tiny, it has a good sensitive microphone, 64mb flash memory (~3hrs on high setting @ 16.0kHz) and easy to use on intial recording.

Cons: No PC interface, (thus you have to re-record the audio from the device onto your PC) and tedious to fast-forward thru 3 hours of audio (no easy way to skip ahead on one continuous file), UI is crappy.

I press record, stick it into my pocket and forget about it. It has a "hold" switch, so it won't accidentally turn off while you're recording (but that does require the user to remember to use it).

To transfer to PC, I plug a line from the ear jack on the device to the line-in jack on the PC audio card. Use whatever audio capturing/editing software you want (plenty of free & demo versions out there). Find the chant you want... press play on the device and record on the audio sw. Edit it as needed (usually just cutting, fade-in/fade-out and audio level adjustment). It records into 2 channels...so it sounds better once you've got it onto the PC. Finally, export it as an MP3 file.

Common sense recording hints: Surround yourself with the best vocal supporters (loud, always participating and in tune); Don't put anything else in that pocket; Don't jump; Avoid conversation during chants; Don't be too close to the drum (the mic can be overly sensitive).

It's easy on the initial recording, but a pain in the ass on re-recording. My rec: get something that has a USB interface so you can dump the file from the device straight to an audio editor (make sure it can record 3 hrs on the highest freq. setting). If I was ambitious, I'd have multiple external mics (so it wasn't as directional)...but seems to work well enough for this purpose.
