Wow I had no idea anything was wrong with the knee.
Get well soon Marco.
On a side note, Etcheverry lives right by me, and Hazel's offices are practically in sight from my house, so at least it's a short commute for these surgeries of his! ;)

So he played last year with a torn ligament on his toe, and this year with a torn meniscus in his knee....Hmmmm
He might have lost a step or some of the brilliance of his younger days, but the man still has plenty of heart. Get well soon Marco.

The only other dude that has played with as much injury then Marco was probally Armas when he tore his ACL against Uruguay. Armas still played for a few minutes despite his knee.
Diablo is a fine example of a fighter. The dude still pounds the ball despite of being slowed down by painful injuries.

Now, the next question for those of us who like to speculate - and that's everyone on here:
What does this mean for the likelihood of Marco's return next year?

Once again El Diablo plays hurt. He sucks it up and grits it out playing every minute of the season. No complaints, no missed time, just giving all of himself for United. THAT'S a leader.
Godspeed on your healthy recovery Etch. You're our legend.

Best of wishes for a speedy rehab, Marco.
I now understand why you walked when you might have jogged.

Have a fast recovery Marco!
I agree that this once again shows how much heart he has. But I have to say, and I know this may seem cruel, but the idea of the team having an aging player like Marco dealing with increasing numbers of injuries that definitely affect his play is a very bad idea especially if he is making even 100K. The salary cap is simply too drastic for any MLS team to carry someone for sentimental reasons and it's getting near to that with Etch. The guy is aging quickly, his body is showing near constant evidence that it can no longer take the strain, and he can't adapt anymore to playing a different style. This is a big problem.

The guy is a "BEAAAAST"
Other players qualify for this, in MLS, NFL, NBA, the other 2 sports I could give a f'''' about. These guys are someone who takes whatever they need to and feal with it.

Not to take away from Marco's discomfort, but it's not like a torn miniscus is all that big of a deal.
Most of you have this. Just put your hand on your knee and bend it.....feel that grinding and popping?
Having a torn miniscus is a little worse than that, and if part of it folds over, it can be a little disconcerting......but a little mental grit will get you through it.
But I do give credit to Marco for his NHL-like qualities in playing through numerous nagging injuries that would have felled lesser men.

Just wish our leader would tone it down a bit on the field when it comes to picking up cards. Another story, another time.
How about this story: Miami Dolphins Wide Receiver Orlando Gadsen, who has a wrist injury and is a free agent after this year, telling the team he will play the rest of the year hurt and not have season ending surgery IF the club gives him a new contract.
The Dolphins told him no, so Gadsen had season ending surgery and is basically finished in Miami. Way to diss the rest of your teammates who are playing hurt, Orlando.
I didn't know Marco was playing hurt.

Either you were lucky or I was unlucky but when I torm my meniscus, it hurt like he11!
For several years I had a similar situation to Marco's - a disconnected ACL that caused the knee joint to occasionally "tweak" the edges of the meniscus. That hurt but was more of an annoyance than anything. When it finally bit off a chunk of the meniscus, however, it was bile-in-the-throat-gonna-pass-out painful. It's what finally got me to get the ACL recon once and for all.
I have a new respect for Marco's toughness but can't help thinking that this kind of injury will continue to plague him.
Get well soon Diablo.

Yeah, we could have used Oronde too! :(
Cris Carter will help a lot though! :)

I am not sure where you are getting your info, but for alot of people, grinding and popping is "within normal limits" and does NOT indicate a meniscus tear. There is a specific way to bend and rotate the knee to test for this condition. Meniscus tears are not considered "within normal limits".
You forgot a few things about meniscus tears, my man.
Like the feeling that someone left thier letter opener in your leg, joint locking, falling over getting out of bed, hurting for a week after running any distance at all. all that FUN stuff. Not to mention the swelling, "water on the knee" and the ice bills.
Of course, I had a Lt. medial bucket-handle tear, back in the days of huge scars and long rehabs. A month on crutches, 2 months on a cane, and PT out the wazoo are such a BLAST!
My respect for Marco, playing through this season with a tear, is huge.

Hopefully with this surgery out of the way, he will once again return as a great leader and inspiration to DCU! Man, I can't wait for the season to start again!!!!
