Currently, Mexico is about to go into halftime with a 2-0 lead against the Chapines. As much as I hate Mexico, isn't it a good thing for Mexico, as a favorite to qualify, to keep picking up points against the rest of the field? That makes it that much harder for the Ticos and/or Chapines to pass us for automatic slots to Germany...

T&T beat Panama 2-0, making it likely that we will be meeting a dejected team on Wednesday. More good news, I think!

A Mexico win is a fantastic result for the USA. This means that the closest team to the US is still 4 points back after todays results which means in essence that the US can afford to lose on Wednesday without any repercussion, aside from hurt feelings and the bogging down of Big Soccer with "Fire Arena" threads.

Go Mexico.

Is it better to root for Mexico so that the US opens up a lead on 3rd place teams, or root for someone to knock them off so the US qualifies 1st?

As long as we qualify, I don't care if it's in first, second or third place.

I just figure that we and Mexico are the best teams in the region. The more we each beat down the competition, the better.

Mexico should be happy that we beat CR. We should be happy if Mexico beats Guatemala.

Don't get me wrong - I HATE HATE HATE Mexico. But tonight, I'm their biggest gringo fan.

Option A, by a mile. Finishing 1st, 2nd, 3rd all come with the same prize. Anything that guarantees we win one of the three spots is what we should be pulling for.

Mex 10
US 9
Guat 4
Costa R 4
T&T 4
Panama 2

Looks awfully good to me.

Understood. I want them to lose, but I also want them to win.

It's looking pretty good right now.

US wins down in Panama and we'll be either 7 or 8 points ahead of the 4th place team (here's hoping for a draw between Guats and Costa Rica).

Both results would be very beneficial to us.

The more evenly distributed the points are blow the US and Mexico, the easier and earlier our qualifying will be. If the Mexico result stands, they'd have 10 we'd have 9 and nobody else would have more than 4.

That said, the sun always shines a little brighter the next day when Mexico loses, so...

Something about rooting FOR Mexico is just wrong. I know it benefits US, but it doesn't feel right.

Yes...I believe this has been discussed numerous times in the past.

I think people are way overstating it, I don't think it makes a hell of a difference.

Just 3 more points in Panama and Bruce can play the B-Team

It's for the exact reason you mention that I wanted to see Mexico lose tonight to give Guatemala some breathing room over Costa Rica.

I see your logic but I would love to see Guatemala playing in the World Cup. Costa Rica would have more of a chance to beat the Asian fifth. So for both reasons Guatemala winning would be great. It's the easiest way for CONCACAF to get four teams and a ton of MLS players into the World Cup.

Plus I can NEVER, EVER root for Mexico!

Qualifying for the WC was a forgone conclusion for me even before we started our first game of the hex. It would have required one of the greatest flops in sports history to have finished fifth or sixth in this hex.

So, while we don't gain anything material from winning the hex, I think we should challenge ourselves to win it. It will force the team to stay sharp during the second half of the hex when we'll be playing a bunch of meaningless matches. Arena should publicly state his desire to win the hex too so the media focuses their pressure on this goal. Otherwise, we could start going the way of Australia.

hahah that Guat goalie basically handed mexico the game. Two of the most bonehead plays anyone could of made. That 3rd seed is up in the air once again.

And I can't believe TnT is in the mix now.

No way that will last, though.

I would have preferred Guat & Mex to tie. Each would gain one point but lose two. In the long run, it's probably better when your opponents drop points. Plus seeing the following standings would also have felt good:
USA 10
Mex. 8
Guat 5
C.R. 4
T&T 4
Pan. 2
OTOH, I'm delighted with the 3-0 vs. CR!

Sorry if this is a stupid question, but how many points are needed to qualify, again?
