Consider this a pre-emptive strike after the Costa Rica game.

My favorite comment so far is from Nutmeg who suggests that today's game was "a player's game -- not a coach's game."
We lose, it's Bruce's fault. We run the #3 team in the region out of the joint and throw them into the middle of a rush-hour four lane and "it was a player's game."
Really? You don't think starting three up top might have had something to do with getting an early goal?

No sh!t.
People bitch and moan about Arena, but he came out, changed tactics and got a quick goal which completely dictated the game.

I said, "not a coach's game" did I? Really? Try again. And while you're at it, go back and find where I blame Arena for our loss against England in any capacity. If you're going to quote me and attribute general statements to me, at least have the intelligence to stick to the words I write.
And yes, I think the players - particularly Kasey Keller, Brian McBride, and Landon Donovan had a much bigger impact on this particular game than anything Arena did.
I seriously question the emotional maturity of anybody who would find that last statement a harsh criticism of Bruce Arena. It's not.
Edit: Just for reference - here is me ripping Arena in the Bruce thread that SZ is bemoaning. Jesus, if Arena reads this, I hope he's not near any tall ledges, sharp objects, or pharmaceuticals.
I'm glad Bruce was more aggressive in his substitutions today. Hejduk came on and made an immediate difference, as the left side seemed to be struggling a little.
As for the opening lineup and game tactics, what can you say? Scoring a goal in the first 5 minutes makes any coach look like a genius. Bruce made good adjustments as the game wore on, but this was the player's game today.

If Keller hadn't really brought his A game, this could have easily been a much less tongue in cheek fueara Arena thread.

And if we'd finished any of our 2 v 1 or 1 v 1 chances when the game was already 1-0 it wouldn't have ********ing mattered whether he did or not.
And if a pig had ********ing wings it would fly.
And if my aunt had balls she'd be my uncle.
And if wishes were horses beggars would ride.
And if Portugal had beaten us in the first ********ing game of our group in Korea/Japan it wouldn't have mattered that Korea scored against them late.

I thought it was really super cool that Mike Lastort took some time out of his participation in the Politics "I hate Bush America" threads and Free for All "What did my Internet friends have for lunch today?" threads to post in USA N&A. I wanted to play, too, so I misquoted you in an attempt to wind up my fellow Arenaphiles. I'm sorry.
Apology accepted.

Where the ******** did that come from?
Are you quoting a PM, Nutmeg, or is that a ********ed up Karl Keller-ish attempt to do a not funny fixed your post?

It's that emotional maturity shining through again.
And Nut, I couldn't be bothered to look your post up again, so I'm sure the quote isn't right. But the meaning was clear enough and I stand by my point.
Anyone who wants to see where you stand on the issue of apportioning credit and blame to Arena can search any of the 100s of posts along the same lines as the one I 'quoted' if they want to.

sampson couldn't.

Nutmeg's had a hard on against Arena for years. He's also a ********y, so I'm not at all surprised that he would choose to a dickwad in this thread too.
As far as I'm concerned, he owes me an apology for his bullsh!t fixed your post crap.

You're right. My post was out of line, and I apologize to people who post in those other threads who I may have offended. But don't hold your breath on that personal apology, Mike. Even though I've disagreed with you in the past, I've always liked to read your opinions. Not any more. On your ********y comment, I expect nothing from you.
I've never expected anything from SZ.
Oh, and I had the balls to admit I was wrong on Arena a long time ago. In fact, Serie Zed just gave me rep for complimenting him somewhere else. Aint that ironic?

Yep, that's it in a nutshell. You treat people with respect, care about them as people, and they will work hard for you and enjoy it. It's not rocket science. If you come off as an authoritarian Nazi, who only thinks of the players only as a means to an end, then they will rebel.
It's funny how so many don't get this simple concept.

What was the old line, "You're never as good when you win a blowout and you're never as bad when you lose one."
The US was due for some luck and got a couple of nice ball bounces and Kasey's stellar play (except his clearing attemts, of course, sans that one header).
Anyhow, it seems that after Wednesday, the top two spots in the group will be pretty much decided - the Mexican announcer on Telemundo said the same thing - so I hope Bruce will begin bringing in younger legs for the next round of quals. No more than a couple at a time, obviously. What could it hoit? Especially, if he gets to see them first during the Gold Cup.

The 3-4-3 was good at the beginning, but it almost cost us in the second half. If not Kasay's stellar game, we would have had a tied game. We had Costa Rica on their heels in the first half, then we held back at the beginning of the second half. We allowed Costa Rica too much space and tried to slow down the game. It failed. It was apparent by the way several of the players pulled up in attack that Bruce had told them to try to take the air out of the ball.
Lastly, the US was helped by the stupid 5-4-1 formation.

Wow another thread where the moderator directs personal insults at a poster. I'm 2 for 2 today.
I thought this was a serious "let's talk about the Nats" forum. I guess I'll go back to the pub and talk to some serious fans. These boards are turning into talk radio.
