It they are granted a CL spot, then it will be a complete travesty. However, if they are penalised in some way for this bending of the rules, then it would make things slightly better.

Yeah, old news now I suppose. We were talking about in the EFC forum, just interested to see what other clubs thought.
However, I think may be an issue in the final decision for UEFA.

If i was Liverpool and they said your not getting any of the TV pool money i would say....
Your cameras will not be allowed in the stadium as we will not be getting payed for this and also your cameras being at the stadium could affect us getting a full stadium without getting any compensation so to speak(Tv Money),so in order tha we fill our stadium(now that you have said we cannot have any tv money),your cameras are not coming in if your not paying for the right.Uefa would not be happy about that.
Liverpool are one of the most watched and supported teams around the globe, also UEFA would like to use the title holders when agreeing tv contracts around the globe to sell the product,so they know it would benefit them financially too, however if we are not getting payed for it then they are not coming in with the cams would be my stance, you don't let a fan in who does not pay for their ticket, the same applys to UEFA.

technically they did not qualify for the tournament.
for an english club to a part of the cl they need to finish the season in 1st, 2nd, 3rd or 4th place. It is a season long task that needs to be completed. Liverpool did NOT qualify, and if they were somehow brought into the CL to defend their trophy, they are in no position to hold such negotiations in the first place.
Yes they won the competition, but they did not live up to the task of ensuring they are a part of it next season. It is not a phenomenally difficult task to require the team you will crown kings of europe to finish in at least 4th place in their domestic league.
I believe they should be allowed to defend their trophy, but also to accept any other conditions imposed on them by UEFA, if they dont like them, then hey - you arent even supposed to be here in the first place. You have what we are offering you or have nothing at all.

If the FA had done what they would normally do which is even on their own website which they removed then Liverpool have as much right as anyone to be there. The cheek of it.
With the season about to reach its conclusion, we clear-up for you how the European places are awarded.
The Champions League
Number of places available: 4
Eligibility
The UEFA Champions League is open to each national association's domestic champions, as well as clubs who finish just behind them in the domestic championship table.
The number of clubs that can be entered by an association and their entry point in the competition depends on the association's position in UEFA's coefficient ranking list.
Who’s in?
The top two Premiership sides will qualify for the competition automatically, while the third and fourth placed teams will enter initially into the qualification rounds, as Chelsea and Newcastle United did this season.
What if?
Should Arsenal or Chelsea win the Champions League, they will automatically qualify for next season's competition but England will not gain an extra Champions League place, even if they finish outside of the top four in the Premiership.
In that scenario the fourth-placed team in the Premiership will play in next season's UEFA Cup.

They were the rules what were there last year and should of been applied this season too,but NO,fa bias towards London clubs, bunch of clowns.
Liverpool should play hard to get and if Uefa say your not getting any TV money then we will play in the CL..
But we won't be playing in the Super Cup,World clubs cup,Continental cup...
Boycott them all and embarass UEFA.
Uefa will soon crumble.

I wouldn't have a problem with foregoing some element of the money earnt by entering. It's not about money, it's about defending the trophy.
Having said that, it will prove to have more or less nothing to do with fanciful notions of "right" and "rules". The sponsors have already made themselves clear to UEFA and it will be on that basis that they will come to the decision they will come to when they meet on the 17th of June.

Even as a Liverpool fan who thoroughly enjoyed the CL win, I don't see any reason why they should be allowed to enter the 2006 CL at the group stage. They should be required to qualify. I think that's fair.

If you look around the sporting world, the majority of leagues/events do not hold a place for last years champion. Even Brazil has to qualify to go to Germany this year, if they somehow don't, they won't be there. In the U.S where playoffs abound to determine champions, there is no provision for automatic title defense. Same in the Canadian Football League, and I believe it's the same in Aussie rules.
I can imagine UEFA's response if they allow them to play and Liverpool gets blown out in a qualifier. Can you say "I told you so?"

Exactly. There really is little precedant in tournament style events for allowing the champion to automatically defend their title.
I am a Liverpool supporter, and I still do not think they should be granted a bid, ESPECIALLY at the cost of another team.
The one proposal I did like was when the Welsh league champions offered to do a one-off playoff against Liverpool for the Welsh spot. It would have given Liverpool a shot (and a pretty good one), while giving the Welsh league a ton of exposure.
I don't think UEFA is going to bit on that one though.

Yes but in all of those tournaments the champions are at least given a chance to qualify, as it is now, Liverpool havent been given a chance to defend there trophy.
I think they should have to start in qualifying round 1 and work there way through the 3 qualifying rounds, then you cant really moan about them being there.

Um.. CHAMPIONS should play in the Champions League.
Liverpool should get a spot. That goes for anyone who failed to qualify in league, but wins the CL in any situation.

They were, they finished 5th, needed 4th.
Granted, they needed to qualify before actually being crowned champions, but the were given the opportunity.

At the very least UEFA should sort out their rules for the next season so this doesn't happen again.
The problem is the silly and unnecessary rule that no association can have more than four teams in the champions’ league. UEFA already caps the number of normal CL places given to the very best leagues to four. All this extra rule does is prevent them giving an extra spot to the trophy winners if the country they come from already has four places. If it had been e.g. a German team, who had won the trophy yet failed to qualify for the next tournament, Germany would have gotten an extra CL place, four instead of the normal three.
In my opinion the trophy winners should always be allowed to defend their trophy, but not by denying a team who qualified from the same country from playing in the competition, even if that country already has four CL places. In these rare circumstances, a country should be allowed to have five teams in the competition.

and which team that worked all season to achieve their spot should lose it?
Alan V put it best, in no competition are the champions automatically given a chance to defend their title. If brazil dont make it through the qualifiers and someone else does better than them, should fifa then go and kick out one of the other teams which worked hard to qualify, and give brazil their place so that they can defend their trophy?

So their response would probably be:
"Have fun in the UEFA Cup guys."
There was no rule in place guaranteeing last year's champion a seat in next year's competition. Liverpool should not go. I would have no problem with such a rule, if it existed, but it currently does not.

That is different, because the preliminaries to the World Cup finals are just that - part of the whole competition.

I can't believe no one has thought of this solution for the problem yet. UEFA could fix all this real easily by saying the winner of the match between the UEFA Champs league winner and the UEFA Cup winner would get an automatic bid for next year. This usually wouldn't be a big deal for the Champs league winner cause normally they'd be good enough to finish in the top 4. But for the UEFA cup winner it'd be real nice.
simple and easy...something UEFA can never understand!
