Great article on Steve, a quality guy and terrific player. My one question: has McBride really played for seven different teams? He had a spell at Everton, I know, but was just a loan or something. Besides that, he's played for the Crew and Fulham that I count. Am I missing something?

(I'm not trying to diverge from the topic of 'Dolo, he deserves the attention; I'm just wondering)

i don't know about McBride and all the places he played - but then again, i heard stuff about Reyna playing in Germany before (which I would never have guessed). honestly i hadn't followed any of the USMNT until the 2002 World Cup (before then, i only knew from blurbs during the 1994 World cup held in the U.S., that Casey Keller was in some big league overseas, Eddie Pope had played in france). i think it all makes Cherundolo's achievements pretty good - even though he didn't step right into a division 1 team, but rather he went into a division 2 team, helped it achieve division 1 status, and built his spot on the team just as he helped build the team into stature in the Bundesliga. :) hopefully Convey would be able to do the same for Reading if they will just make him a regular starter.

Some nuggets that I picked out of that article:
1. "The usual story for a young American in Europe goes like this: Sign with a big club, sit on the bench, leave big club, return to States." Ouch. Can you say, "Not to mention any names, Landon."
2. "Earlier this season, his Hannover teammates voted Cherundolo – the unassuming kid from Southern California who didn't speak a lick of German when he arrived in January 1999 – as their vice captain, an enormous honor for a foreigner and an almost unspeakable honor for an American." Good for Cherundolo. Also, Berhalter is captain at Cottbus, and after his riding to the rescue act, I wouldn't be surprised to see Keller get the honor at Gladbach, if he hasn't already.
3. "Having won over Germans, Cherundolo sees his next task as convincing Arena he should be the starting right back at the 2006 World Cup." I hope he makes it, I really do. Unlike most, I wasn't impressed with his offensive play vs. England - too many wasted crosses that went over the touch line or directly to a pile of Englishmen - but overall I agree he's currently our best bet at right back.

See ... McBride - Milwaukee Rampage, Wolfsburg, Columbus Crew, Preston North End, Everton, Fulham.

If 7, what am I missing?

Reyna played in Germany for several years, first for Leverkusen and then for Wolfsburg. He even captained Wolfsburg for a short period of time. Then Rangers, Sunderland and Man City. (I think I have them all.)

Did he play for another German team? Bochum maybe? (I might be thinking of Wynalda and/or Joe-Max. I know Waldo played for Bochum and Saarbrucken.)

Great article on Steve. Always nice to see an American get adjusted in Germany (having had to do it myself).

Notice at the bottom, under "Best Bets", the US game isn't one of them? WTF?

I almost posted this in another thread with the WTF and everything. If you look towards the top of the article it's there on the right big and bold.

Iīm also very very happy we haev Cherundolo in germany.
He plays very good for Hannover. Despite it is not my team I really
admire how he plays. You have two americans in Germany now.
Cherundolo have to play many games, BL is hard league, so I think
he will get very good ready for WC 06. Great player!!!

or we get another player....someone told me that Onyewu would be
good for Leverkusen, for our defense...I would enjoy to have
more Americans in BL.....

Well I think he has big advantages playing in Germany. He knows how German playes, he knows this "GERMAN SOCCER STYLE"...and it will help him
in WC06...maybe in game against Germany....he has really good experience..
it is your "gold" player...remember it....

Can anybody tell me definitively if it's "Cher-UHN-dolo," the way that I've heard JP Dellacamera say it, or "Cherun-DOH-lo" the way the announcers on my EA Sports XBox game say it? (The announcers are British, maybe that's why it's different).

The Fifa 2005 guys also say Zuh-VAN-yin, like he's French or Italian or something, instead of Zuh-VAG-nin, like it should be pronounced.

I've never heard anyone say anything other than Cher-UHN-do-lo.

You have two americans in Germany now.

Actually we have three in the Bundesliga:
Casey - Mainz
Cherundolo - Hannover
Keller - 'Gladbach

Plus Berhalter at Cottbus in the 2.BL

Plus a host of others in the lower leagues.

Sorry, Mainz finished in 11th this season. They were not relegated. 3 is the right answer.
