with the U.S. now established as a world-recognized soccer force to be reckoned with, and our domestic league (the MLS) becoming more and more developed and established, I think American soccer is reaching the point that other major soccer countries have been through - the evolution of our "style" of soccer. a nation's style of soccer is usually reflected in both the play of the domestic league, and in the strengths of the national team

i'm really interested to know how you guys would describe the style of American soccer?

I'd describe it as:

-speed (or "fast)
-aggression (or "aggressive")
-attack the goal early and often

It's like art - just say it's, uh, interesting and pour another Hermitage.

"High pressure" on a good day, "counter attacking" on a fair day, "clueless" on a bad day.

Hmmm, the main reference point I have is England, and the English games are faster, more aggressive, and more attack oriented.

I describe it as - play it safe and counterattack unless you are playing El Salvador. OR Runs alot, can't finish.

I have to agree with you I think this team would press it's momma if she got off the other team bus which is a good thing but I've also notice something after watching England and Mexico games that they are really like a full court press team in basketball loves to press and get after you but hate it done to them.

The sytle is much like our culture, a little bit of everthing. We combine a little Latin flare but we are moving away from this as the number of Latin players decreases. We can play a physical style like the Germans or play a "long ball game" like the English. We are getting big and stronger are resembling more of European style. But all in all we have a unique style in that we aren't set in the way we play. I don't know if that's good or bad. All I know is that we are no longer a push over and it is very difficult for team to adjust to our style or lack of consistent style.

"Dump and chase".

Or, when Josh Wolff plays, "dump, chase and miss".

I think we incorporate a little bit of everything, but I think we are moving more towards the English style (fast, long ball, lightning counterattack).

Technically, we are a Brazilian/Dutch hybrid...ok, I'm reaching now. ;)

I don't think we really have a clearly defined style at this point. The sport is obviously evolving constantly in this country (increasing participation from "minority" populations, not limited to "white suburbia" anymore), and I believe our national team style is starting to reflect that change/will continue to do so over the next few years.

i've seen the US team played the same style, England friendly & Mexico qualifying match, we attack a lot at almost end of the game and unfortunately we did a little too late in both games to win it. Not a bad idea to start a little earlier than that to gain the result.

CAN'T FINISH ..... God knows if we could finish off our numerous chances we'd been in the 2002 semi finals and would have easily won draws and beat England this past weekend.. other then that one problem.. We have one great side..
