If the Bayern keeper is German, he almost automatically gets a shot at Germany #1.

Except if you're Walter Junghans, Manfred Müller or Raimond Aumann...German Bayern keepers from 1979 to 1994. And in his first four years at being Bayern keeper, Oliver Kahn wasn't Germany's #1 keeper either.

...Lehmann took Klos' place at Dortmund and did the job better than Klos ever did.

I think Klos was more constant in his performances, he wasn't known for too many blunders (unlike Lehmann). A really solid if unspectacular goalkeeper. I will never understand why Berti Vogts overlooked Klos all of the time. He never got to play one single minute while Vogts was in charge. Imo, Lehmann while at Schalke was not a better keeper than Klos at Dortmund. It's one of those Vogts-mysteries.

He acts like he's being "gracious" in stepping down after the World Cup. He should have stepped down after Euro 2004.

Kahn's performance at Euro 2004 was pretty solid. Not like the 2002 World Cup, but also no reason to step down. Where did you get the idea from that Kahn was oh so bad at Euro 2004? He wasn't.

I don't agree. IMO, Lehmann had one really bad season for us.

That was 1999-2000 when the entire thing went badly. Remember, we were almost relegated. Other than that, Lehmann was very consistent for us. Even more than Klos was.

Even when things went badly under Sammer, Lehmann was our one saving grace.

We had more problems with his temper and his getting suspended than any blunders.

I'm going from what I saw. The Kahn I saw was hardly solid. Then again, neither was the entire German team, in my opinion. I guess I just didn't see the same thing everyone else here seemed to.

Ah, you're the best.
But I think it would be better to post the translation in Official German "Nationalmannschaft" thread (http://www.bigsoccer.com/forum/showthread.php?t=203662&goto=lastpost).

Defense

Arne Friedrich: "Herr Friedrich, don't you think that for once you were able to get the most out of yourself by playing wonderfull at right back and that you are one of the success stories of the tourney?" - "Coach has to make that decision“ Come on, Arne.

Andreas Hinkel: Arrived with a rare disease. During the season contracted Morbus Sammer, a defensive virus that leads to chronic insecurity. Was allowed to play against Argentina and Mexico and started the recovery process with runs up the line and an assist. Get well soon.

Patrick Owomoyela: Has cool hair. Didn't have to sweat.

Robert Huth: Is not Brasilian, but still has a pseudonym. Huth is now Huuuuth. Embodies German characteristics as long as that means to look like a bear but to be beaten in the end. He also has English characteristics: Can change things in his direction with a few body checks. Was able to recover during the tourney and was rewarded with a goal against Mexico.

Per Mertesacker: Doesn't have a pseudonym. Merte sounds like not much and Acker has already been taken by a player from Hannover who later became chancellor. Mertesacker will certainly never have to undergo a vote of confidence. He has received so much responsibility that he should start to worry. But not him. He is so cool that he can start the offense. Isn't that too much for a 20-year old? Was responsible for a goal against Mexico-thank god!

Thomas Hitzlsperger: Has a great left foot, which is a disadvantage in Germany. As a result, you have to play left back even if you aren't one. Improved wonderfully but still isn't one. Germany hopes for Philipp to return soon and a place in Midfield for Hitzlsperger.

Bernd Schneider: Played four different postions including left (!) back (!!) and is starting to annoy his teammates. He plays so well that he is a threat to everybody. When will he eye Huth's position? When will he enter the goalie rotation? Klinsi' secret plans: Goalie Schneider plays the ball to defender Schneider who plays the ball to midfielder Schneider who continues the ball to the right winger Schneider who crosses to forward Schneider for a goal. Of course this will be intensive and Schneider will be substituted for Schneider.

Christian Schulz: Came into camp, injured himself and returned home. Should have played left back. See also Hitzlsperger and Schneider.

Thanks. God, I laughed so hard reading that.
Everything he wrote is so true, especially the part about Arne Friedrich.

I loved so hard?? lol

The fun continues...

Midfield

Torsten Frings: Began the tourney by allowing the Australian Skoko to score when he jumped high in the wall. Sometimes played (against Brazi) liked Klinsi wanted him to as a modern number 6. But also played sometimes like Ramelow. Conclusion: came sometimes play pretty well, but sometimes not so good.

Fabian Ernst: His secret is to be invisible but dominant. This time, however, he was more invisible than dominant, which can't be used against him. Played elegantly but not enough to be the dominant player in midfield. Is in the running with Frings but suffered a huge defeat. In a survey "who is the prettiest national player" he finished 23 behind Thomas Bdaric. That isn't good.

Tim Borowski: Played a few minutes against Brazil and with his presence was able to increase the team's beauty points dramatically. He came in for Ernst.

Marco Engelhardt: Was subsituted into the game against Argentina in the 70th minute when Germany was leading 2-1. Four minutes later the score was 2-2. That is not necessarily his fault.

Michael Ballack: He is also close to taking a pseudonym: maybe "man of the match". But he is considering a second alternative, that is: "the man who scored three penalties and a one free kick at the Confed Cup and at the end of the season was fitter than everybody else taking together". That could be a little complicated for the stadium announcers so the he will probably choose alternative number 3: the irreplaceable.

Sebastian Deisler: Man, only if Deisler was playing again! If we would be taking the free kicks again! His crosses! Deisler has been Germany's "only if" the last few years but now he is back. He is back, he takes free kicks, he is a little excitable but is on the best path to return to his glory days at the beginning of his career. And we will work on his beard in the meantime.

Bastian Schweinsteiger: Also has to think about a new name. Brazil's coach Parreira just calls him the number 7. In American TV his name is Schweinzigger. But maybe he will marry Lukas Podolski and will have a double name. Proved to the world that German soccer is fun and and do tricks like the Brazilians. On the one side, has the potential to be a star of next summer's World Cup....

Strike Force

Lukas Podolski: ...on the other side, the competition will be tough. But what is sure is that it won't be easy for the translators at the Workd Cup when they have to translate the interviews of the stars. Maybe they should practice two sentences already: (I am Lukas) Isch bin dä Lukas. (I just score goals) Isch mach dä Ball rein und Ende. Poldi probably doesn't know how good he really is. After the WC he will transfer to Bayern because of Schweini. Unfortunately Schweini will transfer to Köln at the same time, because of Poldi.

Kevin Kuranyi: Like Hinkel also suffered from Morbus Sammer and was apparently so sick that he had to send a double to the Confed Cup. Or was that the highly talented, soft foot Kuranyi himself who sometimes had the ball spring from his feet so far away when he was trying to control it that they looked like distance shots? Nonetheless, the double stuck his foot into the shooting path twice and was able to register two goals.

Gerald Asamoah: Did he also send a double? Or did Kuranyi disguise himself as Asamoah? Asamoah made so many outstanding passes that you would think they were from Kuranyi. Soon they will be playing together in Schalke. This could get confusing.

Mike Hanke: Was annointed "wedge/key" striker by Joachim Löw. As a result, scored a header against Tunisia and lashed out against Mexico. The referee showed him red. He didn't understand what Löw meant. (This one was a sophisticated play on words-sorry)

Thomas Brdaric: Didn't make one mistake the whole tourney, except for his hair.

Metzelder Makes Up For Lost Time (http://www.uefa.com/magazine/news/Kind=512/newsId=316581.html)

In this story, CMetz asks for the patience I've been asking for in this forum. Here's that part: (In case I jacked up the URL entry!) :)

Fitness aim
But first things first. Metzelder's immediate goal is to return to full fitness. He was happy with his performances at the end of last season, although he was employed at right-back rather than in his usual central position as a precautionary measure by coach Bert van Marwijk. He said: "There was not an obvious difference between my showings and those of my team-mates. But there is still a lot to improve."

My comments: BvM didn't use CMetz as a right back as any "precautionary measure". He used him there because we didn't have anyone better after Evanilson was hurt and subsequently released. If CMetz actually played right back, he'd be in the Germany picture there too.

Fresh injury
Metzelder's comeback has been hampered by a new injury recently, a broken wrist forcing him to tone down his return. That, however, will not disrupt his comeback plans, although it did prompt him to make an appeal for domestic help on his personal website.

New era
The advert was a response to his limitations, and Metzelder is keen to play down expectations that he can single-handedly revive the fortunes of both Dortmund and Germany. He said: "I am not a saviour. I am only 24 years old and I have been sidelined for 20 months. After all, I am already regarded as a veteran. This is abnormal. On the other hand, I've always been the youngest player in my teams. Now there are suddenly players who are six or seven years younger. I am faced with a brand new era."

WC without Hanke?

The Wolfsburg striker is banned for 2 WC games after he saw a red card at Confed Cup match vs. Mexico.
The ban can not be served in test matches.

The player is very sad about the FIFA dicission, he thought they would just ban him for one match,
because his foul wasn´t a violent conduct.

source (German) (http://www.spiegel.de/sport/fussball/0,1518,366145,00.html)

Imo the FIFA dicision is total bullsh.it, the player made a fould in 2005, but the ban starts at the WC. This is stupid, FIFA should think about their rules, they are destroying the game. First the beer thing, then the new offside rule and now this sh.it.
Don´t know, which herbs the people smoke there.

Boy. I hate it when I have to defend FIFA, but your rant was dead wrong man.

Well, except for the part about the beer! I agree with that!!! LOL!! :D

This decision is not BS and FIFA aren't on drugs. Think before you rant dude.

The fact of the matter is this.

Germany are in no more directly FIFA sanctioned matches/events before the start of the World Cup.

If Germany had to play WC qualifiers, Hanke would be suspended for the next two QUALIFIERS.

Since Germany doesn't have to qualify, the opening two matches of the World Cup are Germany's next two FIFA sanctioned matches.

FIFA didn't make any special provisions here. This is simply how it works.

And there's nothing wrong with two matches. Hanke just needs to stop bitching. He shouldn't have done it in the first place. He isn't special.

I partly agree. This is how it works, that's true.

I don't think that it was worth a red card, but that's the referee's fault. And FIFA will back up refs in cases where they are more obviously wrong, so you can't expect them to do different here. That's the power of the Tatsachenentscheidung.

I also don't see why this merits two games instead of one. (Obviously, when I don't think it was a red card, i don't believe it was a red card worth of a two-game-suspension, so I probably didnt need to add that ^^)

But it could have happened to anyone. Any player who plays qualifying has the same chance to meet a bad referee and get a wrong red card in the last match before the World Cup, too. That's a fact. So, all players should have the same right to be treated with injustice. No special treatment for hosts.

--------------------------------------------------------------
----------------------Kehl(Frings)--------------------------------

Would he Metzelder be ready for the WC? He is the best defender Germany has, although that's based on what he did a few years ago. And as for Worns, this guy is a disaster ever since the 98 croatia game.

Metzelder is not YET as strong as he was back in 2002 but I'm sure he can and will improve and if that's the case, we'll definitely see him in 2006. Wörns should just be our 2nd choice for either Metzelder or Mertesacker.

He's not yet as strong?? Right now, CMetz completely sucks!!! I hope Kehl's return will help CMetz get back on his game.

The blame for the loss of two points against Wolfsburg and the loss of a point against Schalke can be placed squarely on Metzelder's shoulders.

I've been telling these guys since I've come back to BigSoccer not to expect too much from Metzelder. He's just not the same anymore.

No one listened and I suppose no one is watching because right now, he's worse than he was after he came back last season.

He has to get his confidence back. I don't think he trusts that achilles yet........

I wish you guys wouldn't place so much hope in him. You are bound to get disappointed.
