Watching the England game, in my opinion it was awe-inspiring to see the vast number of England flags hung up around Soldier Field.

Not only did it contribute to what looked like a festive atmosphere, but it made me uneasy about whether we had any home field advantage.

Imagine the England players' reactions to walking out into a stadium thousands of miles away and seeing their country's flag all over. Don't think that excites them in the least?

So my question is, should we emphasize presenting the Stars & Stripes at US matches, both home and abroad?

I know of a few ways where we could obtain many flags, either 3x5 or larger.

So it's a poll, just let me know what you think.

Here's what I think it could look like.... (forgive me, I use MS Paint, and the best looking flag was Besty Ross' old school...)

After going to the Poland game last year, and the England game this year, I walked away feeling we were out done drastically on fan support. A lot of that "feeling" came from the fact that I was surounded by another countries flag. This is something that I think needs to be addressed by the USA's major supporters.

possibly start a donation drive and put the flags in the hands of our most loyal supporters? just an idea

What's wrong with doing both?

With the numbers we have, it would be easier to create a visual effect - but we can still do both.

Even though the US had the majority of the support, the US does not have hardcore support en masse. The majority are casual fans. I don't see this changing anytime soon.

very true

a good percentage of our fans that go to the matches are the "soccer mom" fans, not actual supporters

Walking in to Soldier Field for England and Legion Field for Guatemala, I was blown away by all the flags the opposition's supporters had brought into the building. In both cases, it made me think we were outnumbered. In both cases those fears proved unfounded, but if it made me wonder about it then it probably makes the players wonder. If we want the most supportive atmosphere for the players and the most enjoyable pro-US atmosphere to enjoy ourselves in, I think more US flags would be a great improvement.

Now as a couple people said, US home fans tend to be more casual while travelling fans supporting other countries tend to be more hardcore and likely to bring flags. That doesn't mean those of us who frequent these boards couldn't make an effort to bring and hang more flags. I have two 5'x8' flags myself. I've been to three games this year and only remembered to bring a flag to one of them. No reason I couldn't have shown up a bit earlier and hung them on a railing somewhere, or at least had one around my neck to wave at appropriate times. Furthermore, I know a lot of people who frequent these forums don't sit with the supporter's sections, so if they brought flags that would spread colors through different areas of the stadia right there.

There are a ton of 3x5 US flags available for $1 and even cheaper...if we get a couple hundred of those into peoples' hands, combined with the US flags, rattler flags, etc. that people already have and the various giant flags it'd great a great visual effect. People would have to go into the stadium a couple hours before the game to hang them up, tho.

Question to anyone that knows, a lot of countries write stuff on their flags. As Americans, are we allowed to do this? I know you can't let it hit the ground, so I'm wondering if writing on the flag is wrong or not

It is against tradition to deface the American flag

This is more of a guide. "They" would say it is wrong to write on it.

Even if it weren't against the guidelines for proper treatment of the flag, our flag happens to be one that isn't really suitable for displaying text. Its got dark colors and a fairly intricate pattern on it. There are no big open canvas spaces on it like there were on the English flags we saw Saturday.

THIS IS ONLY AN IDEA

I posted this in the USA-England pictures thread as well

but what if the supporters created their own flags that incorperate Old Glory, so as not to break tradition

That looks pretty good Won... the only thing is that from a distance it would be difficult to make out, and something like that would cost a lot of money. It would be more appropriate for supporters groups though.

could you refer me to where you found flags for under $1? The best I found was around $4 or $5

any suggestions on how i should make it more appealing?

Im sure if there were enough interest we could get major price cuts on the pricing

If I was American I would be doing this type of stuff since your flag is hard to write on. Luckily Croatians write on our flags so I can do that (tho I prefer mine to be on our red/white checker background) :)

Took few minutes to come up with designs in photoshop and it's nothing that can't be sewn (or screenprinted if you can find it in US, prices here are ridiculous). I didn't draw anything I wouldn't be able to do.

Failing that there's allways plain ol' flag. I recomend going to ebay, and typing in magical words like "american flag 5x8." They seem to go for 35 to 50 bucks so maybe if you guys skip few of those $6.5 watered down beers on stadium you could easily get it.

My summer job is at this company. Would be great if I could stir up business before I even start. :)

How about a regular USA flag, with an extra piece sowed on the right saying the city name, vertically?
