Mark Madden from Pittsburgh's ESPN Radio 1250 talked about Liverpool's victory for a huge part of his show Thursday. Not just one extended segment; it was discussed throughout.

Among other things:
a) he said that may have been the greatest football match of all time.
b) Wednesday was one of the three greatest days in his sports fan life (two Penguins Stanley Cup victories are the others).
c) that was the greatest comeback ever in sports history.
d) sang Liverpool songs.
e) declared his show as the official radio show of the European Cup champions.
F) played cuts from the ESPN2 play by play throughout the show

What was great to hear was how many of his regular (non soccer loving) fans were calling to say how they watched the match and found it exciting.

I said before the 2002 WC that ESPN/ABC should hire Madden to promote their coverage and use him as an on site analyst. They should seriously consider sending him to Germany for pre/post match shows and maybe as third man in the booth for key matches of interest.

Madden has that personality which would connect with the non soccer fan, while his passion for the game would be a refreshing change from the cool calm collected presentations we see/hear on ESPN/ABC broadcasts. He could draw non soccer people to the coverage and then they could get hooked on the sport once the games begin. They should at least try him in the USA pre World Cup friendly matches (assuming the USA does qualify).

He'll probably have to return his show to Steelers, & Pirates talk on Friday but for Thursday it was a great time to listen as a fan of the beautiful game.

Joe Sixpack likes a high scoring game. That game had the goals. Unfortunately, for every one of those games, there's a 0-0 draw. :(

Still, great to hear about his mentions of the games.

He called into World Soccer Daily on Tuesday or Wednesday.

In case his name sounds familliar, he was also a commentator for World Championship Wrestling for a while.

Mark is a very funny guy, I have talked to him a couple of times about Liverpool. Anyway, pretty much everyone in Pittsburgh, wheter they like him or not thinks he is so funny. (randomly hangs up and Snaps on people, calls everyone names). I think he connects to the younger crowd too.

For the last couple months he ended every show with the fans version of YNWA.

While I admit that this dude is a great personality for ESPN to have, he also said something to the tune of "MLS is crap and should not be shown." He would like more European league matches to be shown in favor of MLS. I'm not the biggest MLS fan out there myself, but I still enjoy watching the games. I am very proud that my country has a league, even though it's very new and most people don't appreciate how those kids are busting their butts out there.

yea Madden is weird. First of all if you listened to his show, you would assume he would be a soccer basher. He is of the loud mouth sort.

Ive talked to him about the Riverhounds before and he wasnt interested at all. People always tell me that he likes soccer because he thinks that makes him look smarter. He has like a supierty complex, he isnt a big fan of MLS and lower leagues.

He also posts on bigsoccer (mostly in the Liverpool and Premiership fora) under the very creative screen name of "Mark Madden."
