we hear all the harping about how ESPN sucks (which the usually do when it comes to soccer coverage..) but my friend who watches cold pizza and is becoming a bigger MLS, US, and CHelsea  fan is always commenting how he sees coevrage of soccer both local and global on cold pizza.
I turned in this morning and saw a blurb (only about 2 minutes) on the CL final yesterday.
What impressed me is Woody Paige (who I thought was a borderline basher, but wasnt sure, was being interviewed with another guy (african american if that helps narrow down the people, and not the guy from Boston) who is ALSO always on "around the horn."
Anyway, they both said:
1. They love the game, and the goals and rules dont need to be changed.. Yes, WE KNOW that, but it is nice to hear from THEM.
2. The players atheletic level is that of the top athletes, (boxers and some other used as an example..) And that people that disagree are ignorant sports fans. (WOW. again nice to hear)
3. Woody commented that the passion at top level events in europe blows that away of the Super Bowl (surprised he admitted this)
4. And finally, MLS is doing a good job, slowly building the league, and isnt THE sport, but 10 years down the line has great potential..
All in all, good to hear from guys that usually come off as blowhards.

The Hot List (ESPN News) and, to a lesser extent, Cold Pizza, have been providing solid soccer coverage for a while now. People who think the ESPN family doesn't like soccer or some BS like that, are just realizing it.

NOt to harp on it, but sportscenter today had a decent, albeit brief, on the CL victory, and interviewed Tommy Smith.

ESPN also did talk a little about the FA Cup final. I've never understood why they didn't talk more about the Champions League. It's covered on their network, so I would think that they would try and cover it as much as possible so that they could up the ratings. When it comes to the other stuff they show, they force it down your throat with a million ads.

Not to mention ESPN: The Mag and Page 2's Daily Quickie.

All the more proof that ESPN hates soccer.

Dudek's PK save was #1 on the day's top ten yesterday with no snide comments thrown in. I was shocked.

Should have been the double save he made in the 118th minute. Incredible!

PTI mentioned the game on Wednesday.
Tony (I think) basically said the game should not be solved on penalties, just have them play soccer until someone scores, since both teams were protecting themselves and playing for the tie as the game grew long.
Me, I agree. You want to win the game, but you know the more you push up, the more exposed you'll be in the back. So "wussing out" and going to penalties does seem like valid answer.
Getting rid of golden goal AND silver goal was the dumbest thing ever. Keep silver goal, and make the teams actually WANT to score between the 90th and 120th minutes.

Last Friday, during their 1st and 10 segment, the topic was which was the better Manu, Man United, or Manu Ginobli. While Skip Bayless argued that soccer was boring, Woody Paige gave up his spot for Eric Braden, who plays Victor Newman on The Young and the Restless. He was in New York City for the Daytime Emmy Awards, which were that night, and he tried his best to convince Skip that soccer had the better ManU. As for the last poster, PTI's arugument was Thursday, not Wednesday. Also, Woody and the LA Times' Bill Plaschke had the CL final as one of their arguments on the Showdown segment on Around the Horn. The question was, was it a Liverpool comeback or a Milan choke job? Woody took the comeback, Bill took the choke.

I guess it was on Thursday. Duh.
And i'll take the choke job, given the timing of Liverpool's goals. Especially considering that one goal resulted from a blocked PK.

You must be watching a different feed then because I can't remember the last time I saw something like that when I saw soccer highlights.

Not a ton, but when I do watch and see soccer highlights, I don't see anything different from how they treat other sports. Then again, I'm not so insecure that I analyze every movement of someone talking about soccer to make sure they like the sport as much as I do.

I also have the perception that there is consistent snide remarks when soccer is mentioned on ESPN. But I am slightly insecure....

The fact that they had all this post-game discussion about the CL final doesn't surprise me at all.
The thing that DID surprise me was that they re-aired the game that same evening on ESPN2 which I do not believe was originally planned...at least not according to the built in program guide on my digital cable system.

They also reaired it last night on ESPN Classic as an "Instant Classic".

Some snide remarks, I agree, but more just plain disinterest. kind of like "okay, I have no idea what this is about, but it is on my list, so lets just get it off the table so I can move onto barry bonds, something I know about" type attitude...
The announcers really cant excited about something they are ignorant about, so they throw it out there and move on to something "more exciting/familiar."
