What's the deal, I thought the broadcast started at 2:30 ET (I saw the broadcast start before I rushed back to work) but I just got home (8:30 ET) , got ready to watch the tape and found that the game is still on???

Did ESPN do a re-broadcast instead of World Series Poker?

Should have taped ESPN2. :( It was live on there. It did, however, run until after 5:30 due to penalty kicks and trophy presentation.
It's ESPN that has USA - England on Saturday.

But if you saw the broadcast start with the ESPN Gol graphic, then something must have happened.

They are also reshowing it Thursday night on ESPN Classic at 10 ET.

They get a lot of grief at times about their soccer coverage (rightfully so -- no pre- or post-match show for the CL final in the US?), but credit to them for replaying the game twice in prime time to let people watch who missed it. Not sure if the replays are full versions or trimmed down.

The replay wasn't cut from what I saw. You have to also give them credit for sticking with the broadcast to show the full trophy presentation. Honestly, I kept waiting for them to cut away to poker or something.

Good job today ESPN!

The only criticism I had was probably out of ESPN's control. At the beginning, Derek Rae seemed to get cut off before finishing a pre-commercial teaser, and then start speaking before ESPN came back on air. Probably either just a slight error from him, or the product of this being the first game (to my knowledge) that ESPN sent a live crew to, so the flow might not have been perfect. Nothing major though.

Personally, I could do without a pre-game/post-game because I can only handle so much Tommy Smyth. Good but eventually, enough is enough. :)

Otherwise, I really liked the coverage. They really did a good job conveying the drama of a truly spectacular match. Glad that it's gonna be an "Instant Classic" this week on ESPN Classic. I only hope the World Cup Final next year can be this good.

Agreed, good coverage, but it would have been nice to know ahead of time that they were going to do a replay. I'd domehow managed not to accidently discover the score at work only to come home, click on the TV and pop into the 60th minute.

Oh we'll I'd much rather have too much soccer on than none at all. Thumbs up to ESPN!

I wonder will this quite BS posters who get mad thet ESPN shows poker instead of soccer? Nah - probably not. ;)

Agree totally. But for one round of the semi-finals I happened to be in Asia and caught the games there. ESPN Intl'l had an English-language pre-game studio show for either 30 or 60 minutes (can't entirely remember -- games were in the middle of the frickin' night). Don't remember who was in the studio but it wasn't any of the game announcers. The game announcers were the same we get here in the States. I also seem to recall they went back to the studio for analysis after the games. Since it's already being produced, why not throw it on ESPN2 for the final?

The pre and post game show would've been nice. Derek and Tommy mentioned it at one point because Steve Nicol was in the studio in Bristol for that and they were talking about how he must be feeling since he's a former Red.

Since we like to complain about ESPN's soccer coverage so much, this would be a good time to send them some positive e-mails. Anyone have the e-mail addresses usually used for complaints?

If you were in Asia, what you saw wasn't the ESPN Intl. version. It's ESPN Asia, a completely different operation, albeit ESPN is an investor.

ESPN Asia/Star Sports are run by Murdoch's people in Singapore. The studio is run by John Dykes (I think), who also hosts the Premiership pre-game show there every week. They are fully capable of doing their own (better) show without using any of ESPN International's feeds. These guys are all Brits living in Singapore. Sometimes they even invite guests like Bryan Robson, Ray Wilkins, etc. to the show...

A few things on my mind: First, I would have liked to have seen more post match celebrations, I guess they needed to end, with satellite time precious. Second, Setanta Sports picked up ESPN's feed; maybe they couldn't have picked up Sky's feed, but it was unusual to switch between them and ESPN Classic when they had the Instant Classic replay. Finally, Derek Rae referenced Bruce Grobelaar(and I hope I spelled the name right), whos spaghetti-legged antics served as Jerzy Dudek's inspiration. I remember Fox Sports World airing a program called The History of Liverpool, I believe, and highlights were shown of each of the previous European Cup triumphs. Grobelaar's shaky legs were either in the 1977 or 1978 finals, when they played Roma in Rome. I do remember the date I saw this, New Year's Day of 2001. I stumbled upon this while watching a videotape of another program I had taped from my DirecTV, and while a commercial was on, I switched channels and the Liverpool program was on. I would suggest this for FSC to show again, in the near future since Liverpool won their fifth European Cup.

I always thought there was one video feed, with the providers (ESPN, Sky, etc.) inserting their own graphics, announcers, commercials, etc. onto the raw feed.

But that couldn't have been the case for the final. I remember one time when the camera had to aim towards the right in order to show the teams kicking off.

I stand corrected, thanks for the info. That show was quality.

Damn... now I'm going to have to find something else to complain about ESPN about. :)

Lack of games on ESPN? At least they could get rid of the ticker during ESPN2 broadcasts.

Take that and run with it.

What I meant earlier was that there was a world feed and the various broadcasters do insert their own graphics. What I meant to say was that Setanta rebroadcast ESPN's presentation.
