hypothetical

Given that it's going to be hard to convince any team that was guaranteed at the start of the season a spot if they did so well in their domestic league to voluntarily give up their place.

And given that this is the first year of FIFA Club World Championship, a competition the European elite are not keen on.

And given that the main complaint toward European competition is the great excess of games, which wouldn't be a problem if Liverpool wasn't playing in the UEFA Champions League.

Does anyone think UEFA will not give Liverpool a place in the competition next year and just send them off to Japan. I'm not asking everyone's personal opinion of the club world competition, I'm asking if that's what you can see happening.

How can UEFA say you're going to Japan and to Monaco for the Super Cup but you're not going to get to defend your title?

PLEASE don't ever, ever, ever imply the result of the freaking CL Final in a title again!

Because they didn't do what they had to do in order to get to defend their title which is finish in the top 4 in the English league. When Porto won the Champions League last year they also won their domestic league which allowed them to get into this past years Champions League to defend their title. Had they finished 3rd for example in the league that year instead of 1st they would have not gotten to defend their title this year.

That's not true. If a team from a country that has less than 4 CL-spots wins the CL, but doesn't qualify via their league, then they can still defend their title.

So even if Porto would have been relegated last year, they still would have played in the CL this season.

Liverpool goes to the Club World Cup no matter if they get to defend their title or not (if they want to play in Japan off course).
Only problem would be that if they "only" play UEFA-cup next season that the last matchday of the groupstage of UEFA-cup is on the same date as the semifinal of the Club World Cup.
But UEFA can solve this off course by having Liverpool a free day in the last round (as there are odd number of teams in UEFA cup-groups).

There is no way Liverpool will pass on USD 5 mio. and the marketing opportunity in Japan.

To be honest, i don't see how Liverpool is really harmed by not competing in the CL next year. It's not like they would be favorites to win it, there is no way that lightning is going to strike twice like it did this year. If they don't get in they can focus on regaining their place in the league, and have a great chance to win the UEFA Cup, even while fielding understrength sides in the early rounds. They are also likely favorites to win the World Club Cup and the SuperCup. Not being in the CL will not only make it easier for them in all these competions but will also be a motivating factor for the season. So with three trophies within their reach, and the chance to reassert themselves in the EPL, I think they are better off not competing in the Champions League.

Have you ever heard of cash money, money cash???????

What about attracting players who need to play at Champions League clubs??????
