For those of you locally who are driving or coming in and renting a car, here's some important information regarding Saturday. If you were here for Poland-US, you know what a disaster traffic was then, but the city and US Soccer have planned better this time...

For those of you who haven't thumbed your nose at the game, US Soccer and the City of Chicago have put out a traffic alert with parking information for Saturday. To avoid a disaster ala US-Poland game, here's some information...

*** TRAFFIC ADVISORY: Fans Attending U.S. vs. England on Saturday, May 28, 2005
Advised to Arrive Early, Take Public Transportation ***

Large holiday weekend crowds are expected at downtown Chicago attractions, around Solder Field and at the Museum Campus on Saturday, May 28, as the international soccer match between USA and England kicks off at Soldier Field at 2 p.m. CT.

That event, combined with regular Memorial Day traffic, an early Fun-Run at the stadium, and downtown street closures for the city's annual Memorial Day Parade, make Saturday a high-alert traffic day in Chicago.

U.S. Soccer and the City of Chicago Traffic Management Authority highly encourage fans to arrive extremely early for the soccer game and to use public transportation whenever possible.

For those driving to the game, be aware that parking at the stadium ($20 per car) fills up quickly and is anticipated to do so very early for this event. When this happens, auxiliary parking is available at the following locations:

McCormick Place lot at 31st Street and Lake Shore Drive (free shuttle service to and from stadium available)
Underground garages at Grant Park and Millennium Park (1.6 mile walk to stadium, free shuttle service not available)
Parking in the neighborhood west of Soldier Field is restricted. Cars parked illegally run the risk of being ticketed and/or towed.

U.S. Soccer has put together a list of transportation options (see below) to make your journey to Soldier Field for this highly anticipated event as easy and enjoyable as possible. Welcome to Chicago, be safe and have fun!

PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION:
CTA - The Chicago Transit Authority buses and trains are a convenient way for fans to reach Soldier Field.

CTA Red, Orange and Green Line trains stop at Roosevelt and fans can walk a half mile east to Soldier Field.
CTA #146 Inner Drive / Michigan Express bus operates from north lakefront communities, North Michigan Avenue and State Street in the Loop direct to Soldier Field.
CTA fares are economical - just $1.75 for adults (25¢ for a transfer) and 85¢ for children age 7-11 (15¢ for a transfer). CTA Visitor Passes offer unlimited rides for 1 ($5), 2 ($9), 3 ($12), or 5 ($18) days for one low price. Order in advance at www.transitchicago.com or purchase at Visitor Information Centers, Hot Tix, Navy Pier or select neighborhood currency exchanges.

Thanks for the notice. I hadn't even thought about parking.

I was just about to post this...glad to see it's already been posted.

Fortunately, we are flying in from Florida and staying in the downtown area so we won't have too much trouble.

It'll be interesting to see how the England supporters (the ones flying in from England) fare with all the things going on around Soldier Field.

While it may be true that the convicted Hooligans are banned from this match, most of the England supporters that will be making the trip have probably never been to an England match where they will be given such a lengthy rope (relatively small police presence, booze in the parking lots, booze in the stadium, lack of security separating home and away supporters, etc) in which to hang themselves with. I doubt there will be any major trouble though.

Yeah, with it being a friendly, an expensive trip, and England still probably not taking the US Team completely seriously, I think it will be friendly drunkenness (pun mildly intended) rather than angry drunkenness

Also, for those staying downtown (or anywhere for that matter), cabs are gonna get stuck in all that mess as well. Do yourself a favor and take the red/orange/or green lines to Roosevelt and walk. It's not that bad a walk to the stadium, the scenery's nice, and you'll save yourself a hefty cab fare when you're stuck in traffic.

Bottom right hand corner is where the stadium and station is.

Don't know if there's any way for the mods to merge this with the similar thread in the Chicago Fire forum so that it's visible in both locales. If not, be sure to check there also as we locals may be able to offer more useful advice.

Like - do not under any circumstances attempt to park at Soldier Field lots.

If you are driving, park somewhere in the south loop or loop - or north of the river for that matter and take one of these alternate forms of transport listed in the order in which I would try them.

- walk. THe trek down Michigan Ave, throught the park and out to the museum and Stadium complex might be a mile or two - but it's quite pleasant in most weather.

- Cab to Columbus Drive, south of Buckingham fountain and then walk.

- Subway to Roosevelt, then walk

- If the weather is decent and you are staying or parked up Michigan Avenue. Plan a morning walk or lunch on Navy Pier then board the water taxi at the south west corner of the pier. It runs back and forth between the pier and Shedd Aquarium a ile across the harbor. $12 ($10 seniors, $6 kids) round trip gets you a nice view of the skyline and a quick exit from the museum complex. This link gets you the route maps (http://www.shorelinesightseeing.com/watertaxis/routemaps.htm) (select the "Lake Route")
I called and confirmed they start running Saturday.

- consider the free trolley to Shedd Aquarium or Field Museum. It's slow but if you have lots of time and are incredibly lazy...

Best advice of all, be patient - it's going to be a crazy day - especially if the weather is nice!! :D

I am glad that the USSF posted this because you can't stress it enough, but the notice has lots of errors in it. Soldier Field is NOT "1/2 mile east of" Roosevelt Road Station. There is a bus to take you there because the 1 mile walk is not everyone's cup of tea, even though it is a delight. I also think mentioning the Green Line is a bad idea for out of towners becuase if they miss their stop they could end up in a very, very unpleasant neghborhood. All of the stops on the Red Line are pretty safe. My advice; forget there even is a Green Line for purposes of this weekend.
Metra does NOT offer "convenient service to Soldier Field." Union Station is a 45 minute walk, LaSalle Street Station is a 35 minute walk. The IC goes right by but few trains stop at 18th Street and the city tore down the old bridge to the Museum Campus so you face a 1.6 or so mile walk from the IC.

And unless they catch their mistake by the Chinatown stop, they'll end up in the same neighborhood, just two blocks west.

Besides, the 35th street stop in Bronzeville isn't that bad anymore. Most of Stateway Gardens is gone, there's a police HQ right there, as is IIT.

OK, fans, Tom's probably right (even if I think he's a tad nitpicky in this case). If you're going to take the Green, make sure you catch your stop. If you think you'll be that much in the tank by then, stick with the Red or Orange.

Here is a map of the Chicago L.

http://www.transitchicago.com/maps/systemmaps.html

As a lifelong Chicagoan I STRONGLY!!!!! advise using the L. We exit at Harrison, have a few at the South Loop Club (convienently across the street from the Pacific Garden Mission for those of you betting heavily on England) and walking the mile and a half to Soldier Field. We always allocate 1/2 hour for this walk and never miss the kick off. If you revere the FIFA anthem leave a bit sooner. If you do go to South Loop Club (in the New Carter Hotel 'no visitors after 8 pm") Look us up. Well all be in Fire kit. Well buy you a Pabst Blue Ribbon (or, if you insist, a Watneys Red Barrel)

Shhhh... We only wanted the cool people to know about the South Loop Club ;)

This is the best advice anyone could offer. When Soucth Loop Club fills up , there are several other quality locations in the area.

- bar Loiue (http://www.barlouieamerica.com/dearborn.html); 47 W. Polk St
- Blackie's; 755 S. Clark St (a couple blocks farther to walk)
- Hackney's Printers' Row (http://hackneysprintersrow.net/locations/chicago/); 733 S. Dearborn St
- Kasey's Tavern (http://www.kaseystavern.com/) (my local watering hole for many years);701 S. Dearborn

Get there early, park and belly up.

They've sold more than 40,000 tickets, so should be a bigger crowd than the recent double-header.

Thanks for the tip. I'm staying at the Travelodge, which is right around the corner from the Harrison stop, so we may have to check out one or more of the places you mentioned.

I am going to be staying in Chicago up near North Michigan - not far from the Northwestern campus (the closest "attraction" on the map would be Water Tower Place)...

Is that a reasonable walk to Soldier Field? I was planning on walking to and from the game, but I'll only have, at max, two hours or so to spare between getting to the hotel and getting to the game. Reasonable?

Anyone know what time the lots open? I know Sam's Army and Barn Burners are tailgating about 11am, but my Dad and I want to get down there earlier for our own tailgate. Thanks.

You're talking roughly 2.5-3 miles each way. I don't know what kind of shape you're in and how fast you walk, but it's not unreasonable. Worse comes to worse, the water taxi suggestion fron Navy Pier or walking to the Red Line stop at Chicago and taking that to Roosevelt are probably your best bets. You could probably Red Line it down and then walk back if you like the exercise.

Use this:
http://tripsweb.rtachicago.com/

you can choose your address or landmark (and yes, Soldier Field is in there). Pretty easy to use.

And/or use this:
http://www.transitchicago.com/maps/rail/rail.html
This shows the subway and there is a map of every "station".

Soldier Field is located about .5-1 mile east/southeast of the Roosevelt transfer center.

yes you can walk it if you allow 45 minutes. In 1994 LOTS of Germans did exactly that. If you don't want to do that you can hop on a number of buses on Michigan Ave. The 146 will take you right there; others will take you part of the way there. The Red Line is a 10 minute walk from the Northwestern downtown campus. Add the 15 minutes from Roosevelt Road 12th Street on the Red Line and you are not saving any time.

Yes but Tom, the Germans were wearing lederhosen...

If anyone is walking down Michigan Ave to the game, wear lederhosen!

They can also be worn after the game on North Halsted.
:p

Seriously though, Tom's right. Take public transport if you're not lugging tail gate supplies like grills, get there early, & bask in the glory that is Chicago.

I'm very ready for a good day of US Soccer! :D
