View Full Version : What's New?

And I don't mean the jazz standard (and you better not be thinking of Linda Ronstadt's version).
I mean what is really new sounding in recent pop/rock? Operative word being recent -- I'm not interested in the Velvet Underground, or Sgt. Pepper's, or Kraftwerk or any other things that were indeed quite new at the time. I'm thinking from the 90s on, the more recent the better. I'm not the most adventurous listener, so I'd love to hear what's turned your head.
Here's the first six that come to my mind. Albums that made me think "Now that's pretty different."
Sigur Ros: Agaetis Byrjun
The inspiration for this thread as I subjected commuters in my car to this record this morning.
DJ Shadow: Endtroducing
I'm expecting some quarreling over this. But if others can point to earlier similar work, all the better.
Sufjan Stevens: Michigan
Radiohead: Kid A
Of Montreal: Satanic Panic in the Attic
Broken Social Scene: You Forgot It In People
Probably the most traditional/least qualified for this category. But for a relatively traditional band, this album has a sound unlike most others. To me, anyway.

Great question.
I have no answer, though.
The last record that made me say, "Wow, that's unique" is that Sigur Ros album.

I have no idea.
I've long believed that everything I enjoy listening to is somehow derivative of my older sisters' record collections. In one way or another for me, it all goes back to either The Who's "The Kids are Alright", Dylan's "Blood on the Tracks", The Rolling Stones "Hot Rocks" or The Cars' "The Cars".
My tastes got tweaked a little my my freshman-year roommate who showed up with milk crates full of albums like The Fall's "Grotesque", Jesus & Mary Chain's "Psychocandy" and VU & Nico. But I can even find connections between those albums and my sisters' albums. He just taught me to look further than what is on the radio.
So, I have zero idea what is new and fresh.

Of Montreal was the first thing to hit me, Yo La Tengo's And Then Nothing Turned Itself Inside Out second.
Others I could take guesses that they're really revolutionary, but it could be that I just don't know enough about their influences... The Avalanches? Lambchop? Daniel Johnston? Diamanda Galas?

Speaking of fresh and new bands, I'm going to go see Pilot Drift late in June. I can't wait.
Another band you guys should check out is Porcupine Tree. AMAZING live.

This review (http://www.beardscratchers.com/Reviews/S/sigur-().php) of "()" does as good a job as any describing it.

Reggie and the Full Effect - Promotional Copy
--for my money, what all of today's high energy faux-new-wave bands are doing a very pale, not as fun imitation of.
It's like really good new punk rock, but always melodic, funny, and with keyboards as well. If you've never heard it, at least check it out. 2001-2002 release.
Refused - The Shape of Punk to Come
-- I'll give you the benefit of the doubt and hope you've heard it before... but if you haven't, GO GET IT NOW. It's the most unbelievable punk/hardcore/whatever album ever made, hands down. 1996 release.

The Killers. You're just trying to wind up Ted.
- Which reminds me, I know we're tired of hearing about the Arcade Fire but they've taken the Talking Heads influence and taken it to a new place. A shame their studio tracks don't sound nearly as good as their live stuff.
- The aforementioned Avalanches: they didn't originate cut & paste sample-based music, but they sure make it sound seamless.
- As far as "hard to define" goes, first group I thought of was Brazilian Girls.

That's one of my favorites in my collection.
Really good stuff.
It's also, coincidentally, the next CD queued up in my playlist after the Butthole Surfers is over.

Just mentioning it makes me want to listen to it.. so I started listening when I posted it.. now I'm on my favorite track "Tannhauser/Derive" which is a flippin AMAZING song. Give me shivers up my spine every single time I listen to it. Seriously, I TRIED to de-shiver this song by playing it dozens and dozens of times in the car on repeat, and even rewinding my favorite parts... and EVERY TIME it gets me. The monologue near the end... LIVING....LOVING...AND SEEAAAAAARCHIIIIIIIIIIIIING!!! just about brings a tear to my eye.... flippin astounding stuff.
I saw these guys live in '96 in a tiny little basement in Minneapolis, opening for Snapcase... they TOTALLY blew everyone away, they hadn't hit it big here yet, and this was right before this album came out. Besides the fact that they jumped around and participated in the show more than anyone I've ever seen (considering it was in a basement) the drummer was playing stuff as fast and as hard as in the albums, but with two sticks in each hand. These men are rock and roll GODS as far as I'm concerned.
