Roy Carroll is expected to sign a new contract at Manchester United after being given assurances over his future by Sir Alex Ferguson.
It had been anticipated the 27-year-old Northern Ireland goalkeeper would be on his way out of Old Trafford after four seasons at the club.
However, Carroll is now set to sign a three-year contract with his present deal about to run out and he will fight it out for the number one spot with American Tim Howard, who has been given a new deal which will keep him at the club until 2009.

Yikes! He's a liability! Manchester United should be gunning for Shay Given instead.

That story is insane, Carroll is worthless as a #1. I could see resigning either him or Howard as a #2 keeper, but to sign both of them is stupid. It sends out the wrong message about your clubs ambitions, also. I really don't get it at all.

Manchester United could spring a surprise by signing Roy Carroll to a three-year contract.
Negotiations had stalled with the Northern Ireland international and it was expected that he would leave under the Bosman Ruling in the summer.
With Tim Howard already penning fresh terms and Sir Alex Ferguson likely to bring a new goalkeeper into the club, as has been previously confirmed by chief executive David Gill, any decision to retain Carroll would seem a little puzzling.

On a similar note....
I just got the "Soccer AM: Top Ten Goals" dvd, and there is a hilarious clip of him making a major gaffe with Wigan back in the 90's.
After seeing that I can't believe we signed him.

What's so damn hard about that?

This is how the story should have been written:
Roy Carroll's agent has confirmed that Carroll is ready to put pen to paper on the three-year deal that has been on the table for weeks. It became obvious to Carroll and his agent that he would not make as much money with another team, and certainly would not be guaranteed the number one jersey. In order to save face, Carroll's agent is telling anyone that will listen that Alex Ferguson gave Carroll assurances about his future with United. Ferguson is reported to have said the following; "Yes, Roy. I assure you that you are still welcome to sign the contract that was offered to you earlier."

If you want a positive spin, maybe Carroll will be the backup and Howard gets loaned out.
I'll admit I think it's more likely they figure Howard and Carroll are better than anything they can pick up for the little they'll have left after they buy midfielders.

I'm honestly not too worried about this. Until Ferguson starts seriously talking about this to the press I won't be taking it very seriously.

That's also my view. So far the only comment is from Carroll's agent  regarding these assurances from SAF...
Go Get Given!!

It would make sense to sign Carroll for *one* year. The plan would be to address the club's biggest needs first, hope Howard matures as a keeper, and have Carroll on hand in case he doesn't. Then use next year's transfer kitty to replace Howard if he fails.
The notion that GK is among ManU's top 3 needs is silly. It's scapegoating.
This would be a good place to ask all of y'all to look at where ManU ranked in GF and GA. The problem isn't the defense. The people at the club who operate logically and not emotionally see that.
And this idea that Given is some massive upgrade over what you have is ridiculous. He's better, yeah, but he ain't exactly Cech out there himself. You've all just talked yourselves into thinking he's better than he is because he's obtainable.

The notion that GK is among ManU's top 3 needs is silly. It's scapegoating.Christ, we have fans from every other Premiership club laughing at our keepers - even Arsenal! What we have is just not up to scratch, and has cost us dearly with more than their fair share of stupid errors this season.
This would be a good place to ask all of y'all to look at where ManU ranked in GF and GA. The problem isn't the defense. The people at the club who operate logically and not emotionally see that.Yes, but that comes down to one thing and one thing alone: finishing. We have had more shots at goal than any other team in the Premiership this year, and have dominated possession in almost all our games, as well. What we have lacked is somebody to finish them off properly. Is it any coincidence that the two best finishers Man United have had in the past 20+ years (van Nistlerooy & Solskjaer) have been missing for the vast majority of this season? They should be back and in full fitness (Ruud never had the chance to get fully back to fitness - Achilles' take a long, long time to fully heal), and if they are anything like what they were before their injuries, we'll be hammering goals in for fun again.
And this idea that Given is some massive upgrade over what you have is ridiculous. He's better, yeah, but he ain't exactly Cech out there himself. You've all just talked yourselves into thinking he's better than he is because he's obtainable.Just look at how Given has done with a passable CB duo in front of him for Ireland - clean sheets against the likes of France, Brazil, Holland, Portugal, Romania, Switzerland & more I cannot think of at the moment, in the past 18 months alone. Newcastle had two matches without him this season and in those two they conceeded... get this EIGHT goals. Ask any Republic of Ireland fan, or any Newcastle fan how good he is. Cech is up there with Buffon, Dida & maybe Casillas, but Given it's not like Given is Felix or anything. He is a massive upgrade on Howard and/or Carroll.

Why the doom and gloom  . Nick and Steve said today on World Speculation Daily that Utd are signing Frey, Given and Casillas, in additon to keeping Carroll and Howard. I think Utd are covered. Chin up
