As reported on the YA forum, Earnie retires for good. A class individual, meeting him at the airport and giving him a Barra jersey was a highlight. We wish him all the best....

Earnie is, was and always will be the epitome of class.
His contributions to soccer in this country cannot be measured.

Apparently he wants to coach in Holland, but I would love to see him return and help out with USA youth development. He could not only coach players, he could help youth coaches get the best out of them. Make him an ambassador to inner city youth soccer and suggest that there is an alternative to basketball, especially if you're not likely to grow past 6'3".

Problem with that is his wife didn't like it here. They both wanted back to Holland.

This had to happen, of course. Everyone gets older, all professional athletes' careers end, etc.
But this really bums me out. Long before he came to DCU, he was a fave of mine.

Good luck Earnie, as Technical Director at VV Venlo. Earnie's contributions to the Nats in the '90's helped push them "over the top" from struggling wannabe to a solid international side.

Earnie will make a great coach.
Maybe he can put a little of the old bulldog into a new generation.
Good luck to number 8.

This is why the subforum concept sucks donkey di<ks. Frankly, having the Earnie tribute thread buried away and not a sticky on the front page of the DC United forum is a travesty. Not only was he one of the top all-time great US National Team players, but he came to us in our darkest hour and stuck it out to bring home a championship returning United to glory. He took a lot of sh!t too and just kept being the consumate pro.
Congrats on a Fantastic Career to Earnie Stewart. A US Nat and DC United hero for the ages.

My 10 favorite Earnie Stewart moments. In no order of preference...
1). The goal against Colombia.
2). His first goal for United - beautiful ball into the corner from Etch. Cerritos puts it right on Earnie's head. Onstad had no chance.
3). The free kick in the 2004 season opener that Jaime headed in.
4). The goal in New Jersey that may or may not have been offside.
5). That cross to Gomez in the Eastern Conference final.
6). The corner that led to that first goal against Portugal.
7). The backheel that Joe-Max pounced on against Argentina.
8). The cross that Zotinca put into his own net - the eventual Cup winner.
9). Putting it through Walker's legs for the fourth goal in the 6-2 game
10). The second goal in the WCQ against Columbus

It's a good list. If it were mine, I'd find some way to add in there his MLS Cup-saving sweeping tackle of Davy Arnaud approaching the end of the match.
But the moment I will remember the most, for some reason, was his reassurance of Donovan at the end of the WC02 Germany match.

Good additions, Bootsy. I forgot about the tackle on Arnaud.

Hahaha. I missed that one too.
I figured he meant against Mexico in Columbus -- the second goal in the cold war match, 2001, where Josh Wolff dribbled along the backline and then sent the ball out for Stewart to boot in.

No, I meant in Columbus. He scored the second goal in the 2-0 victory against Mexico. It was awesome because he got to the ball before Fat Mathis could put it over the bar.

What a fantastic picture!!!!
Given Earnie's smile and the angle at which the photo was taken, I really don't want to know more about this...
