but they can't finish worse then 12th in their league. Teams have to submit an application I think then UEFA decides who deserves a spot.

The 3 winners of the Intertoto will qualify for the 1st round of the UEFA-cup.
Dutch participant is Roda JC.

There's also a limit on the number of teams per country, although in some countries the interest is so low that this is basically true.

I have to think Man City will play so that they have a chance at playing in Europe.

UD Leiria (Portugal) Finalists that lost to Lille last year will be the sole representive of Portugal despite finishing worse then 12th. No other team (like Boavista for instance) wanted to go so after last years performance and because they were the only ones interested they got in.
I hope they make it to the UEFA Cup to rub it in those teams in Portugal's faces who thought that they were above this tournament.

I know Lazio has intended to apply, this is the first time I've heard of the top 12 stipulation tho. The club has played in europe for 10 straight yrs and wants to keep the streak intact.
Wildly enough, then can still be relegated or finish 10th or so with just 1 game left...
I dont know of another Italian team that would apply, now that either Udinese/Sampdoria along with Palermo and Roma have the UEFA Cup spots locked up.

Hm,a very curious Intertoto Cup.With Wolfsburg,Dortmund,Hamburg,Newcastle..
Portuguese side Belenenses could get a spot instead of leiria. But that's ok.
Maybe some good names coming from France and Spain?

If they submit their desire to play they would of got it. But I think a deadline has past for entrants in Portugal (5 weeks ago there was concern for Guimaraes and Boavista to apply as one of them was not going to make the UEFA cup) anyway the only Portugal team that wanted to go was Leiria so UEFA gave them the Portugal spot.

I am routing for UD Leiria of Portugal who were finalists last year but the competition looks stiff. Here are the more notable teams:
S.S. Lazio (ITA)
Olympique de Marseille (FRA) <-They are getting a spot for sure IMO
Newcastle United FC (ENG)
Valencia CF (ESP) <-so are they unless they face Marseille
BV Borussia Dortmund (GER)
RC Deportivo La Coruńa (ESP)
BSC Young Boys (SUI)

I know alot of ppl think that the UEFA Intertoto Cup is more or less a joke... or at best, just a 2nd rate tournament that only teams from small countries take all that serious. However, this is not quite the reality. If you look at all the past winners then (except from Danish Silkeborg) the tournament has only been won by clubs from the top 5 leagues in Europe...
For ppl who are interested... The past winners of the UEFA Intertoto Cup:

Croatia has Slaven Belupo and Varteks.
Some teams refused to participate because the league starts very early (because of the WC) and Intertoto doesn't fit in their schedule. It's not a very attractive competition, expenses are big, and chances of reaching UEFA Cup competing with teams like Borussia are minimal.

If it's too depressing, you can always decline an invitation. Some smaller teams might enjoy the competition.
