----------------------------------------------------------------------

Lets break it down:

Championship:

The Championship is already decided, Lyon retain their 4th successive Ligue 1 crown.

Champions League:

Both Lyon, Monaco and Lille are guaranteed to be in next years Champions League. However the 2nd placed team gets direct qualification, with the third placed team needing to go through the 3rd qualifying round. At this stage, Lille are in the CL proper, in 2nd place. Monaco need to win and hope that Lille lose., in order for the Monegasques to get into 2nd place.

UEFA Cup:

4th place will automatically grant that team a spell in next years UEFA Cup. At the moment Rennes are in that position and could seal the place with a win against PSG in Paris. A Rennes draw or defeat will leave a lot of permutations available. If Rennes lose, then Marseille to win, a draw will not be good enough. If either Auxerre or St-Etienne win, then Marseille must win to have a chance of getting the UEFA Cup Spot.

If Auxerre win and St-Etienne, Rennes and Marseille all fail to win, then they will seal 4th spot. If they win the cup next week as well, then this spot will be granted to Sedan in Ligue 2, as runners-up.

So -

* Rennes - Must win to guarantee a spot in Europe next year. If they lose or draw, then they must hope that Marseille fails to win. If they outright lose, then they must hope that Marseille, St-Etienne and Auxerre all fail to win as well.

* Marseille - Must hope that Rennes lose or draw in Paris. If that happens, they will need to beat Bordeaux. A draw may be enough, if Rennes lose heavily in Paris, and both St-Etienne and Auxerre fail to win. If they lose, then they are in the Intertoto. If they draw, and Rennes lose coupled with Les Verts and Auxerre winning - then all four will square off on goal difference. St-Etienne would be the most likely candidate to progress if it comes down to that.

* St-Etienne - Mission improbable for Les Verts. Must beat Monaco in the principality and then hope Rennes and Marseille lose. If Rennes get a point, then there is no chance of UEFA Cup football. If the Bretons lose, then they must hope that Marseille don’t beat Bordeaux. They will then progress into Europe, unless Auxerre win and score a lot of goals at home to Lille. They could miss out on Europe altogether, if they lose to Monaco and Auxerre and Sochaux both win.

* Auxerre - Simply must win and hope that Rennes and Marseille both lose. If this happens and St-Etienne win, then it will come down to head to head. At the moment, Les Verts would be the likely candidate. If Rennes get a point in Paris, or if Marseille win, then they cannot finish 4th.

However, AJA may still get a European place regardless of placing, if they can lift the French cup next week at the Stade de France.

Intertoto Cup.

Well, same as UEFA. The teams who don’t reach their UEFA Cup targets will be dumped into this competition. With the exception of three teams.

* Sochaux - They must beat Ajaccio and hope that Auxerre or St-Etienne lose. If both teams draw, then Sochaux will leapfrog Auxerre into 7th. If both lose, then Sochaux will jump both teams. However, they can still get a Intertoto spot, if they hold onto 8th by winning or hoping that Lens or PSG don’t jump above them by winning themselves. If they can hold onto at least 8th, then an Auxerre Cup win could well give them an Intertoto shout.

* Lens - Must win, to stand a chance. If they draw, they must hope that Sochaux and PSG lose. If Sochaux win, then Lens cannot do anything but win and hope that Auxerre and St-Etienne get nothing. A win, in this case, would mean a chance of stealing an Intertoto spot. Again, they can get an Interoto spot from finishing 8th, only if Auxerre win the cup.

* PSG - Mission impossible - A win. Nothing more nothing less. A win coupled with Lens and Sochaux failing to win, would guarantee 8th place. If Auxerre win the cup, they can get in via the scruff of their necks.

Relegation:

Istres are relegated and will remain rock bottom, and as it stands both Nantes and Bastia occupy the other bottom two spaces.

Everyone up to Bordeaux can go down.

* Nantes - Must win, anything else and they shall be relegated to Ligue 2. A win and Ajaccio, Bastia and Caen failing to win, will mean they stay up. If all three do win, they no matter what they do, they will be relegated. A win, and both Caen and Ajaccio drawing will mean they will also be safe.

*Bastia - Bastia also need to win, a point may be good enough, provided that Caen lose and Nantes do not win.

*Caen - Again, a win is a must, provided that both Bastia and Nantes both lose.

*Ajaccio - A point will be good enough, provided that Bastia and Caen don’t win. Again if they both lose then they will be safe, regardless of what they do.

*Bordeaux - Would require 3 wins from Nantes, Caen, Bastia and Ajaccio inorder for them to go down. A point and they are safe no matter what.

I know its pretty complicated but it’ll make more sense as the goals go in…. :)

great work ganu!

do you think PSG would play the intertoto if they got the spot, or desist like OM last year?

God.... Poor Marseille. The fans down there deserve better.
And Nantes! What a loss that would be for L1..... A total disaster if Ajaccio stays up.

Is this the first time Nantes are facing relegation? How long have they been playing in L1?

It depends who is coach next year I guess.

If a new guy comes in a decides it won't be beneficial to enter the team, then they won't.

I would like to see them do it, but it really is a double-edged sword, can we afford to risk the players to get into the UEFA, or should we knuckle down and concentrate on the league? Either way its a gamble....

Right about now, or chances are slim to none. We have to hope, Sochaux and Lens lose and hope that Auxerre at least win the cup.

Its out of our hands really...

Not sure, but they went close in 1991, when they renamed Nantes Atlantique because of financial trouble.

EDIT: 42 years. Wow. Didn't think it was that long, but yep. There you go. 42 years in the top-flight.

Very sad, if it comes to an end. :(

I do feel for the fans of Nantes, with my uncle nearly in tears over the whole affair. . .

Be that as it may, Allez Stade Malherbe Caen!!!!!! God I hope they can stay up. If so, what a topsy-turvy year.....
